... BR standard insulated meat vans (just 250 built), at least three of them. Now, they could be transporting meat - that's probably likely, in fact - but seeing as they're not a million miles from Park Royal, and many were used in beer traffic, lettered 'Ale', the load might well be Guinness
... Not going to.argue with Adam's comment - possible that the meat vans were wending their way to Smithfield.

I guess the first is a barrier wagon of some sort, the load in the second is indeed curious, as it appears to be chained down, but to what?
The load in the second wagon may be two cube-shaped containers with square lids. On the nearer one, it looks like there are two lifting "eyes", and the apparent "chains" are probably metal straps continuing down to the bottom.
They are similar in size to BR "L" containers (D3/450), but these had vertical ribs, and lifting eyes on the top.

Thank you, Graham @Dog Star for your comment about the pannier tank. The commentary has been corrected by way of an Edit - and thanks too for your kind comment about the photos.

Then Adam @AJC, Graham again, Simon @simond, Tim @Tim Humphreys ex Mudhen and Barry @Barry37 for the debate about the train behind said pannier. I so enjoy these debates about the otherwise unremarkable details.

I'm taking a bit of a risk here as I'm now retitling all the North Acton photos as Old Oak Common West. If any are actually North Acton please intervene so I can change the commentary back.

Castle Class 7004 Eastnor Castle at Old Oak Common West on 15th June 1962. This was a Worcester engine where it was allocated in July 1960, moving to Reading in September 1963 where it was withdrawn in January 1964. (SLS). It was scrapped at Swindon Works in February the same year. (BR Database).

Also a nice selection of big four and BR vans, three SR vans in a row gives me hope as I have too many of 'em!

As it has two containers would this be a fitted freight rather than a parcels turn?

In a brief return to post #2,387 and around the photos of Neasden with the mention of Marylebone to West Ruislip local services. I noticed when passing through Marylebone tonight, West Ruislip local services still exist 62 or so years later in 2024...

The Ogmore Castle shot tells me that my ballast is FAR too big.

All three SR vans seem to be the D1458 2 + 2 unequal planked design built from 1938 to the early 1940s.
The leading container has a sheet over a leaky roof.

Those Wood Green Semaphores are something else! Would they rank amongst the tallest?
Put to shame by Rumbling Bridge Down(?) Home signal, I think. No need for a lampman to ascend the mast, since, as was comon with North British practice, the lamp was raised and lowered by means of a windlass. Maintenance of the arm and its fittings, however, looks like a job worthy of a steeplejack.

Regarding Martin's (@Martin Shaw) comments on OOC new signalling work, Swindon Panel Society's website gives 8 OCtober 1962 as the date when the original main line and engine lines panels were replaced by Integra panels, with a reference to OOC Main which suggests that these in turn were replaced and their functions combined into a single Integra panel in September 1967.

Speaking of wagons, in img3243 I think I detect the ends of two Diagram 1657 LMS goods brake vans.

Tony @Osgood, Dave @Genghis and Simon @simond. Thanks for an unexpected diversion in to the height of certain signals and how they were maintained.

Tony @76043, Barry @Barry37 and John @John Palmer more wagon info - thank you.

Dave @Yorkshire Dave - I know those photos around Neasden very well and it's certainly interesting that a West Ruislip service still exists.

Simon @simond. So sorry to hear about your big ballast.

Hall 5979 Cruckton Hall on a down Didcot semi fast at Old Oak Common West on 15th June 1962 seen previously in post #1821. It had been a Reading engine since November 1948, Gloucester Horton Road in April 1963 and ended up at Worcester in September 1964 where it was withdrawn in November 1964. (SLS). Rail UK and WHTS report it then went to R S Hayes at Bridgend and was broken up by April 1965 - WHTS report it as having been observed there at the end of February 1965 and as being stored at Worcester in November 1964. Edit: Just noticed that rather nice cattle wagon on the right hand side of the frame... Such an ordinary item but representative of a traffic now entirely gone.

King class 6015 King Richard III has been seen previously in post #2541 and here it’s on a down Birmingham train at Old Oak Common West on 15th June 1962. It was still an Old Oak engine where it had been allocated in 1947 (BR Database) but in June 1962 moved to Stafford Road. It was withdrawn at the end of September. (SLS). It was scrapped at Cox and Danks, Oldbury, in April 1963. (BR Database).

Castle Class 7014 Caerhays Castle on the down Red Dragon to Cardiff at North Acton on 15th June 1962. It was just coming to the end of it’s time at Old Oak Common where it was allocated in September 1961. It then went to Stafford Road in the month following this photo, moving to St Blazey in September 1963 and finally Tyseley in July 1964 where it was withdrawn in February 1965. (SLS). It was scrapped in May 1965 at Cashmore’s, Great Bridge.

An unidentified Grange with no front numberplate on a van train at Old Oak Common West on 15th June 1962. Tim recorded only a single Grange on film 64 which was unidentified. However there’s another Grange on the same film, in img3261 below.

Grange Class 6805 Broughton Grange or 6806 Blackwell Grange on a parcels train at Old Oak Common West on 15th June 1962. This is another frame not identified on Tim’s list. 6805 was allocated to Ebbw Junction (Newport) in October 1960 and withdrawn in March 1961. (SLS). It was cut up at Swindon Works (WHTS) in May 1961. BR Database and WHTS). 6806 was a Worcester engine from July 1961 and was withdrawn in October 1964. (SLS). The Railway Observer recrd it as at Swindon dump in November 1964 and WHTS that it was still at Swindon in December 1964 although the precise location within the works is not described. According to BR Database it was scrapped in November 1964.

Another unidentified on Tim’s list is this County on a parcels train at Old Oak Common West on 15th June 1962. However, the numberplate can be read as 1010 or 1040 and as 1040 didn’t exist we’ll go for the former, added to which 1010 has been seen in the same location previously. County 1010 County of Caernarvon was allocated to Swindon in October 1959 and subsequently withdrawn in July 1964. (SLS). It went to Cashmore's (Newport) from whence it was despatched in the following December. (BR Database).

Behind "1010", the second vehicle is a GWR Y11 Fruit D, which had three pairs of doors. (There's also another, or the same one, behind the unidentified 61xx, three photos up.)
The fourth vehicle seems to be a passenger coach, could be a "Big Four" design, a Mk1 open second, or the corridor side of a compartmented one. The windows are "frosted" up to the sliding part of the window. Odd.
The second van behind 6805, is probably a GWR V22 Mink G, slightly longer than the Fruit D, but with only two pairs of doors.
