When the thin railfan veneer is peeled back the bus fanatic is revealed :) . It happened here yesterday and the morning's meeting degenerated into bus (and truck) reminiscence.
As a kit designer, I have no problems with the concept of designing road vehicles in addition to railway items viz., this 7mm scale London K3 class trolleybus

I can't imagine why anyone would find that odd. After all, it's just another area to research prior to sitting down with pencil and graph paper.

It’s surely no more odd than favouring one pre-grouping company over another, or BR blue, or model planes or ships.

Such a lot of lovely stuff about the cars and buses in the Aberdeen photo. Please forgive no individual thanks this time. Incidentally, and probably of no interest whatsoever my first car was a 1956 Ford Consul Mk1 bought in 1966. It was a smashing car and when I bought my next car (a Rover 90) I kept the Ford and started to restore it. Then a "friend" asked if he could borrow it following his vehicle breaking down (and I bet you are ahead of me now) he utterly wrecked it. However we had an agreement which he honoured, that he'd pay me the same money I'd paid for the car... £50.00.

Thanks for the thoughts about bus enthusiasts and your smashing picture, Arun. Count me in as a closet bus enthusiast...

Thanks too for the additional info about the Cotom Hill Signal box as well, @GreenAyre42 . Not useless info at all if anyone is going to tackle a model...

Three photos, img 721, 722 and 725 at Aberdeen Ferryhill in May 1965. Featured are A4 60026 Miles Beevor and V2 60818. I remember Miles Beevor well as it was a most reliable performer from Kings Cross when I used to visit. (That means it was there pretty well every time I was). In fact it was allocated to Kings Cross from September 1951 and then New England from June 1963 before going to Scotland, St Margarets in October/November the same year and Aberdeen Ferryhill in April/May 1964 where it was withdrawn on 21st December 1965. (SLS). As reported in post #4264 the story after withdrawal is rather complex but it appears it was sold to Motherwell Machinery and Scrap in February 1966 but the deal was cancelled for unexplained reasons and the loco returned to Perth in August 1966. By the end of September the loco was at Crewe Works where the SLS report it as seen in the Traverser area on 11th December 1966, 9th January and 19th February 1967 and then in the Works yard on 18th June 1967. Ultimately it was broken up by Hughes Bolckows at North Blyth in September 1967. (Info from SLS and BR Database).

As for the V2 60818 it was at Eastfield in July 1960, St Margarets in October/November the same year and finally Dundee Tay Bridge in November/December 1963 where it was withdrawn on 22nd August 1966. (SLS). It was sold to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw in October 1966 and was scrapped the same month. (BR Database).

Two photos, img724 and 730, of B1 61263. The first is on shed, and since it was allocated to Dundee Tay Bridge since 1950 I like to think it may be there. The best information we have for a date is mid 1960s. However we have more for the second image which was near Cove Bay on the climb out of Aberdeen with probably empty mineral wagons in May 1965. As mentioned previously 61263 was only ever allocated to Dundee Tay Bridge and was withdrawn at the end of December 1966. (SLS). It was scrapped at J McWilliams, Shettleston on 27th February 1966 although that clashes with the supposed date of sale for scrap which is the same. (BR Database).

The first photo, img726 is of A4 60007, Sir Nigel Gresley, passing Aberdeen Ferryhill with the 1.15p.m 3 hour express to Glasgow via Stirling in May 1965 and the second (img739) is of the same loco at Kinbuck near Dunblane in the same month. The loco was allocated to Aberdeen Ferryhill in July/August 1964 and was withdrawn from there in January 1966. It escaped the torch, though, and details about the loco after BR service can be found here: 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley (LNER 4498, LNER 600, LNER 7 & BR 60007)

Sir Nigel has been seen on these pages a few times previously both before and after preservation and for those who want to search for images 311 and 328 are a good start.

I have happy memories of both A4 locos 60028 'Miles Beevor' and 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' as regulars on my train-spotting trips to Grantham as a lad. From time to time they were 'on shed' as opposed to working through on the main line. Those were the days when blue liveries were extant, too.

Were the taxis Morris Oxfords or Austin Cambridges?

I'm going with the latter from a zoom in on the boot and the shape of the words, but I have a feeling that the Morris did not have the double chrome trim strip down the sides, and one of the other taxis has a single trim strip, that might be an Oxford.

Cortina Mk1 on the left. Might be a Hillman Hunter estate ahead of it, but it might also be an Anglia estate. I think there’s a grey Vauxhall Viva at the front of the taxi rank, and I’m failing to click on the two tone thing in the middle. Was it a Consul?

days of our youth, eh?
Looks like a Consul ? I owned a MK 2 High Line and was once told that they were often used as taxi's because of their tight turning circle ?

This was my old '59 job. c. 1990.

Memories, memories, eh Roger? In my mind's eye I can still see the A4s lined up at the buffer stops...

Thanks all for the extras about the Ford Consul. I had a rear window heater on mine that was a strip on rubber suckers. And yes, that fell off too. I'll not mention the driver's door which would open of it's own accord on left hand bends - bench seat and no seat belt...

A sadly rather blurred photo of Black Five 44931 leading an unidentified A4 at an unknown location on a van train in the mid 1960s. However I wonder if this photo could be anywhere near either Ferryhill (see img726) or Kinbuck (see img739) in May 1965. It seems quite likely. The Black 5 was allocated to Perth South in 1950 and stayed there for the whole of its life, being withdrawn on 12th October 1965. (SLS). It was scrapped in May 1966 (BR Database) at Campbell’s, Shieldhall. (WHTS).

Does this fall in to the category "a prototype for anything?"

Black 5 44705 on a van train and I believe in the same location as the B1 in img 730 in which case it’s near Cove Bay on the climb out of Aberdeen in May 1965. The loco had been at Perth South since 1948 and was withdrawn on 2nd September 1966. (SLS). The loco was stored at Perth from September to November 1966 (WHTS) and was scrapped at McWilliam’s, Shettleston and was seen awaiting entry to the yard on 20th November 1966. (RO). It was scrapped in December 1966. (BR Database).

Britannia 70001 Lord Hurcomb at Geneagles Station in May 1965. It moved to Scotland in October 1964 when it moved from Aston to Carlisle Kingmoor. (SLS). It was withdrawn from Kingmoor in August/September 1966 and was scrapped in December the same year at Motherwell Machinery and Scrap, Wishaw. (BR Database).

Barclay, Ross & Hutchison, Agricultural Engineers. An Aberdeen firm with their engineering works at Torry. Which gives the location for image 727.

It’s not a ‘van train’. It’s fish, often double-headed.

The first 4 vehicles are CCTs, did they use these for fish? Most fish trains used insulated vans or insulated containers. The non insulated fish vans had extra ventilation (which is why us spotters avoided one bay at W'ton Low level!)

Companies House has two "Hutchison Engineering" companies, one is at Denny and one is at Dumbarton.
The sign on the building is for Barclay, Ross & Hutchison Ltd. Agricultural Engineers. (Visible letters in bold). Their premises was Craigshaw Works, sometimes given as Torry, sometimes Tullos, Aberdeen. I am not sure when the business closed but must be 1980s or later as I remember it.

The photo of the fish train was taken from or adjacent to Wellington Road looking approximately south-west.

The logs in the foreground might be related to Craiginches Saw Mills if this business was still operating in the ‘60s. Ferryhill MPD is visible top left on the map.
