A sadly very underexposed B1 61393 on an up fitted freight at Hornsey on 7th July 1962. The loco was allocated to New England in November 1959, Kings Cross in February 1960 and Mexborough in June 1963. It was withdrawn in September the same year. (SLS). It was scrapped at Cashmore’s, Great Bridge in the same month. (BR Database).

Edit: Now confirmed as a fish train.
Could someone explain why there is an insulated van behind the brake van in the fish train? I realise the rules for fitted trains could allow it but what would be the reason for it, Hornsey is a long way from fishing ports. Would the van be positioned there to allow a quick drop off before the trains final destination?

I think that’s the most likely answer, a late pick up being the other possibility, tacked on by a pilot loco somewhere. Fish is one of the few traffics likely to be so time sensitive as to allow that. I should have spotted that, it doesn’t *quite* line up perfectly with the signal box’.

I'm in no position, Daves @Yorkshire Dave and @daifly to challenge you suggestion about these photos and had the same thought myself. The two photos are, indeed, on different film strips within the same folder so I wondered whether Tim had two cameras in use as was seen very often in the '60s. Certainly when looking through Tim's photos he was quite punctilious about identifying any photo not of his origin as "Not One of Mine" but it's always possible that some photos slipped through the net. I'm caught on the horns of a dilemma here as, if there are two photographers involved I don't know which are the Tim Mills originals. I'm going ahead with publication while acknowledging that there must be some doubt about the origin of them and they follow in this sequence.

Thank you Barry @Barry37 for proposing some useful modelling references and Arun for more detail about 60123.

Then thanks @Overseer and Adam @AJC for picking up on the "extra" vehicle at the end of the fish train and the likely reason it is there. I have to say I don't remember ever seeing this myself and I'd certainly not noticed it until you drew attention to it.

Another pair of photos, this time of A2/3 60513 Dante, previously in posts #1970 and #2554, on the down 6.17 Peterborough train at Potters Bar on 7th July 1962. It was based at New England and withdrawn at the end of April 1963. (SLS). It went back to the place of it's birth, Doncaster, where it was despatched by the beginning of May. (BR Database).

At the time of the photo it was a resident of Kings Cross where it had lived since new in December 1935, moving to New England in June 1963 and being withdrawn in October. (SLS). It went to Doncaster Works for disposal which was completed by the year end. (BR Database).

Here's another one of a "pair" - I'm as certain as I can be that we saw this loco on img3379 in post #4178 although I'd not linked the two photos at that time. The date and location are identical and I suspect that could be Tim in the frame here, judging by the viewpoint of the previous photo. This loco has also been seen previously in post #1757 and here is at Potters Bar on the down 6.50 to Cleethorpes train on 7th July 1962. Britannia 70041 Sir John Moore home shed was Immingham and had been since the end of December 1960. It moved to Carlisle Upperby in December 1963, then Kingmoor in February 1964 before being withdrawn in April 1967. (SLS). It was scrapped at J McWilliams, Shettleston, in September 1967. (BR Database).

Brian,

In the pair of pictures of 60128, in the second one, there is a woman standing by the turnout which would have been the camera position for the first picture - Tim's wife/girlfriend???

Where a pair of photos exist of the same train Tim's appear sharper and clearer of the two.

Also following on @JimG s observation above it would appear Tim handed a second camera to a second photographer.

Well spotted, Jim @JimG . By George, I think you've got it! I believe that's Linda, Tim's wife or possibly girlfriend at the time. As far as I can tell the general dimensions look about right ! She accompanied Tim on many if not most of his trips and appears in occasional photos (she's prominent in the one of the cattle crate at Kings Cross, if you remember it. That's img2214 in post #2540.) I agree, Dave @Yorkshire Dave that Tim's photos are somewhat the sharper of the two images which suggests that he was probably using the superior camera.

Seen previously in post #942 is Princess Coronation 46254, City of Stoke on Trent on an up Liverpool train at Tring Station on 14th April 1962. By September 1960 it was a Crewe North engine, came up to Camden in March 1963, back to Crewe North the following month and was withdrawn from there, along with so many of the class, in September 1964. It went to Cashmore's Great Bridge for scrapping which had been done by the year end.

I’m intrigued by the first two coaches in the train behind City of Stoke on Trent. They have the look of a pair of Gresley streamliners (and I think I can only make out one bogie in the middle, implying they were a twin set) but I wasn’t aware they had left the Eastern or Scottish Regions.

Nigel

Martin Shaw

Western Thunderer
Perhaps more likely Nigel is that they were one of the BFK/FK or BTK/TK twins from the Coronation Scot sets that post war were used often in the NW Manchester/Blackpool services. That they appear on a London train is unusual. Larry G will of course be able to give us an accurate assessment, please.
Martin

Regarding the two leading vehicles in img3416, the carriages that seem to me to most closely resemble these are the twin brake first + semi-open first constructed to Diagram 200 for the Silver Jubilee set and numbered 1581-1582. But I could well be wrong.

An articulated BTK+TK from the LMS' Coronation Scot stock found its way into the middle of the formation of the 7.40 (SO) Bradford West-Bournemouth service on 21 July 1962. The absence of a gangway connection on the brake end must have been the cause of some surprise to anyone attempting to move from one end of the train to the other!

Hello Graham @Dog Star . Sorry to say I've no idea who is standing in front of the camera in img3418. However, as we've seen in previous photos at Tring the station was a hot spot for train spotters so it's quite likely to be one of them.

Nigel @James Spooner , Martin @Martin Shaw and John @John Palmer - I've nothing to add to your interesting suggestions about those coaches. As you say, perhaps Larry will be along in a minute to give us chapter and verse.

The second coach appears to have five fixed windows (one might be a door) which may be the corridor side going past compartments, then three with sliding vents at the top (open section?). The lower. side panels seem to continue down to the bottom of the solebars.

These were exactly the characteristics that prompted me to think that this is the First Class twin set from the Silver Jubilee, and the more I compare Tim's picture with others featuring the Silver Jubilee carriages, the more convinced I become that these form the lead vehicles of that Up Liverpool train. Additional characteristics consistent with this are the footboard positions, the luggage/guard's compartment door arrangement, and the lavatory ventilator at the far end of the leading vehicle. I gather that the Silver Jubilee's First Class twin set and the (expanded) Third Class triplet set were diagrammed for a Glasgow (Queen Street)-St Andrews service known as the 'Fife Coast Express' from 1952 at least until about 1960, leaving a remaining lifespan for the Firsts of around two-three years up to December 1962. The Silver Jubilee rake was a 'one off', making this twin set a unique pair, and it is interesting to note that, having been allocated to the Scottish Region for much of its post-Nationalisation career, it seems to be found in its final months of service in the formation of a London Midland Region train - was it re-allocated to the LMR after ceasing employment in the Fife Coast Express?

Of the six coaches behind Black 5 44869, three (first, fifth & sixth) seem to be brake/second* types. Perhaps a tad excessive, unless this train conveyed a lot of mailbags.
* "Third Class" apparently ended on 3 June 1956. Not a lot of people know that – well, I didn't know when it ended.

Described as Royal Scot 46103 on the up Lakes Express near Tring Station on 14th April 1962 this is clearly not that loco – see img3440 a little later which is of that loco on that train. This description is now an unidentified Royal Scot on an unidentified train...

The photos taken near Tring in posts #4,235, 4,236 and 4,238 were taken in and around Newground Road bridge between Tring Station and Cow Roast. Looking at the map there is a nice shallow sweeping S bend here in the WCML.

Newground Road bridge circled red on the NLS OS 1:10,000/1:10,560 1949-73 extract below. The bridge will be unrecognisable today as it was rebuilt during the WCML electrification

The old A41 is in red with Tring Station and Cow Roast circled in blue. The Valiant Trooper in Aldbury is circled in magenta :). One thing I didn't realise existed near Aldbury was an Isolation Hospital (circled in green).

Tring map.jpg

I see from the last two photos Tim had his entourage as there is an individual standing on the bridge parapet in the photo of 70020 and I would assume Tim may have known the individual in the last photo of the unknown Scot as they have been captured looking at the train while being framed by the telegraph pole guy wire. A better image in my view would have also included the right hand post of the signal gantry.

That's a remarkable bit of detective work, Dave. I've lived in the area for around fifty years and didn't recognise it. I didn't know about the isolation hospital either. Next time I drive along Newground Road I'll look for signs of it. The Ward Block still exists as a rather attractive private house (for those with a Flickr account - not me! - see ) and there is quite a bit written about it and the association it had with Tring isolation hospital (I believe also now private houses - I'll have to check as there has been redevelopment of the site as well) in local history society documentation and otherwise on line see PUBLIC HEALTH COMES TO TRING.. Thank you for that - I suspect that very few of our neighbours are aware it ever existed and I'll doubtless impress bore them with my local "found" knowledge! Sadly the Valiant Trooper, although it still exists as a pub, is a shadow of its previous self.

In fact, for anyone interested in local history this is a right royal rabbit hole. When I have a spare weekend :)) I'll try to read everything and educate myself further. In this respect, from "Tring in 1947" - Hertfordshire Genealogy: Book: Tring in 1947 - All quiet on the Hospital Front
"Councillor Dorian Williams said that with the ambulance which relies on a local milkman’s horse it means that it would be quicker to transport cases to Hemel Hempstead or St Albans. … The Clerk said they did not rely upon a horse ambulance these days. They had an arrangement with Aldbury hospital to use their motor ambulance. Bucks Herald, 7th March " made me smile.

As for Tim's "entourage" I believe that may be Tim's brother in law - or the chap who'd become Tim's brother in law. I didn't know Tim in 1962. He had many friends with similar interests with whom I was not acquainted, of course. I'll also now attribute all the photos "near Tring Station" and "taken lineside at/near Tring" to the same location.

On to the business of the day. :)

The real 46103 Royal Scots Fusilier (see the previous post and img3437) on the up Lakes Express from the lineside at Tring on 14th April 1962. The loco was allocated to Saltley in July 1961 from where it was loaned to Leicester Midland in May 1962 and then went in to store at Saltley even though ex-works in early June, Carlisle Upperby later in June 1962 and Holbeck four months later where it was withdrawn in December. (SLS). It was reported in store at Farnley Junction from January to August 1963 and then observed at Crewe Works C Shop on 29th September the same year. (WHTS). BR Database record a scrapping date the same month.

Jubilee 45631 Tanganyika on a down Liverpool train lineside at Tring on 14th April 1962. Seen previously in post #2621 it was a Crewe North engine from July 1961, moving to Saltley in March 1963 where it was withdrawn in August 1964 (SLS) although Rail UK and BR Database advise withdrawal from Crewe North in August or September 1964. There is general agreement, though, that it was scrapped at Cashmore's, Great Bridge, at the end of 1964. (BR Database).
