Interesting comparison of 7314 and 7325, particularly the reach rod. Was 7314 lever reverse and 7325 screw?

Yes. 7325 was part of the later Collett series originally numbered 9300-19 with longer frames, heavy buffer beams, side window cabs and screw reverse. The frames & buffer beams were modified by BR to the 'old' spec and locos renumbered.

Good spot, Dave, as confirmed by Dave whose post crossed with mine,

the “sticky-outy-box” thing on the front of 7325 contained the front of a screw reverser, visible on lots of GW locos. The lever is visible in 7314, so I’d say “yes”.

According to my Andrew’s book, (the Churchward 2-6-0s) 7314 was built on Boxing Day, 1921, 7325 was 9303 built 23/2/32 and re numbered 5/6/58, apparently it involved removal of the ballast weight.

I'm just off to the office, but it looks like the window cabbed variants (all?) had screw reverse. See page 42, last para.

David @Genghis - I'd not noticed that. I was aware of the most obvious difference, ie the cab side window, but not of the reverser. Thanks Dave @daifly and Simon @simond for confirming and expanding the detail differences. Much appreciated.

16XX Class 0-6-0PT 1668 at Oswestry Shed on 7th May 1961. It was allocated to Oswestry in August 1960 and withdrawn in January 1965. (SLS). The Railway Observer report the loco as seen being cut up at Maden & McKee, Stanley, Bootle, Liverpool on 11th June 1965. However WHTS report it at Cohen’s, Kettering.

57XX pannier tank 3600 at Oswestry Shed on 7th May 1961. (1668 as seen above in front). It was allocated there in February 1959 and went to Neath in January 1962 where it was withdrawn in November 1963. (SLS). WHTS report the loco at Briton Ferry and BR Database that the date of scrapping as April 1964.

Manor 4-6-0 7809 Childrey Manor and smoke box number plate-less 74XX 0-6-0PT 7434 at Oswestry Shed on 7th May 1961. The Manor was allocated to Oswestry in April 1959. It moved to Shrewsbury in February 1963 where it was withdrawn in April the same year. (SLS). It was noted in Swindon Works C Shop on 28th April 1963 where it was cut up on 15th June 1963. (All WHTS).

7434 was allocated to Oswestry in February 1961 and withdrawn in October 1962. (SLS). The SLS reported the loco at Oswestry Works on the Shed Dump in August 1963 and BR Database that it was scrapped at Cashmore’s Great Bridge in June 1964.

Fascinating to see that 7474 had been given a toolbox. Following an afternoon at Croes Newydd watching the comings and goings, the last 16xx I saw was at Wrexham Central hammering through the station with a freight in the direction of Bidston in 1964. At the time, I admit all Pannier Tanks looked alike to me, but for some reason I happened to look at the number.

A favourite of mine… Dukedog 9017 in store at Oswestry Works on 7th May 1961. The loco had been allocated to Machynlleth since at least June 1947 and was withdrawn in October 1960. (SLS and BR Database). I saw this loco myself in steam at Old Oak Common despite being withdrawn when on its way to the Buebell Railway in February 1962. For further details see

Welshpool and Llanfair 0-6-0T No 1 or 822 The Earl under overhaul at Oswestry Works on 7th May 1961 shortly before return to the railway on 28th July 1961. The line was closed in 1956 and then leased for preservation from 1962. For details of the loco and the recent history of the W & L see

Recorded as 94XX 0-6-0PT 9400 but actually 3400 at Shrewsbury Shed on 7th May 1961. It was a resident of Shrewsbury from November 1958 moving to Radyr in May 1962 where it was withdrawn in November 1964. (SLS). It was reported as scrapped at Hayes, Bridgend (WHTS) in February 1965. (BR Database).

The 93XX looks massively impressive. Not the thing one would see on a country branchline, although we modellers used 'em in the 1960s. :p

9017 revived memories of a teenage holiday - I travelled behind a 90xx from Penhelig Halt to Dovey Junction. Some of the class were in use on the Cambrian Coast line whist I was in the area. A very distant memory, now, I'm afraid. I have five of the class logged as seen but unfortunately cannot remember the one particular to the train I used.

Thank you for sharing that, Paul - LNER Wood & steel Minerals, wooden hoppers, | NE274579 - shows another key LNER feature, the axleboxes. Incidentally, the mineral in the background of the nice shot of 3400 is almost certainly another LNER 16 tonner as indicated by said axleboxes (the squared, welded(?) pattern).

I always thought the 2-6-0slooked rather small compared with the locos of the same power on other railways, Larry @LarryG . But I guess it was the weight that was the Achilles Heal.

Paul and Adam. Thanks for more stuff about wagons. That's an area in which I'm seriously deficient.

As for the Dukedogs, Roger. I thought I'd never see one in working nick. Well, I did - just!

2251 Class 2276 at Shrewsbury Shed where it had been resident since May 1960 on 7th May 1961. A little more than a month after this photo it moved to Machynlleth where it was withdrawn in September 1962. (SLS). It then went to Cashmore’s, Great Bridge, where it was scrapped in July 1964. (BR Database).

County Class 4-6-0 1023 County of Oxford at Shrewsbury Shed on 7th May 1961 carrying an 82c Swindon shed plate where it was allocated in March 1961. It went to Shrewsbury in October 1962 where it was withdrawn in March 1963. (SLS). It was seen in Swindon Works Dump on 2nd July 1963 (LCGB) and was scrapped in August the same year.

Behind the County is 6958 Oxburgh Hall. This was allocated to Pontypool Road in October 1959, went to Cardiff East Dock in June 1964 and on to Ebbw Junction, Newport in September the same year, ending up at Worcester in November where it was withdrawn in June 1965. (SLS). It was scrapped at Cohens, Morriston in October 1965. (BR Database).

Stanier 2P 0-4-4T 41900 at Wellington Shed on 7th May 1961. It was allocated to Gloucester Barnwood in July/August 1957 where it was withdrawn in March 1962. (SLS). The SLS also recorded the loco in Crewe Works Scrap Road on 8th April 1962. It was scrapped later the same month in the Works. (BR Database).

5101 large prairie 4120 next door and shown in the next photo carries an 84H, Wellington shed plate. It was allocated to Wellington in December 1960 and moved to Stafford Road (May 1962), Tyseley (July 1962) and Leamington (October 1962) where it was withdrawn in November 1964. (SLS). It was scrapped in December 1964 (BR database) at Bird’s Morriston, Swansea. (Railway Observer).

Nice collection of sheds built in different materials - brick, concrete and wood...... just needed a fourth built from straw....:)

Or thatched, at least. The concrete one is an absolutely standard WR pattern from Taunton concrete works. They were incredibly common (I think the one used as a lamp hut at Yeovil Pen Mill is still there), but nice to see how new that one was, and the variety of tones evident in the concrete.

LMS 2P 4-4-0 40653 with Dabeg Feed Water Heater at Uttoxeter Shed on 7th May 1961 still carrying a 5A Crewe North shed plate. By now long withdrawn it had been a Crewe North engine since March 1957, spending periods in store in August 1958 and January and March 1959 before withdrawal in November the same year. (SLS). It was scrapped at Cashmore’s, Great Bridge in July 1961.

Crab 2-6-0 42825 with Lentz Valve Gear at Stoke Shed on 7th May 1961. The loco was allocated to Burton in September 1954 and withdrawn in June 1962. (SLS). It was seen at Horwich Works on 28th October 1962 (WHTS) and scrapped in mid November the same year. (BR Database).

Original Patriot 45537 Private E. Sykes, VC at Crewe North Shed on 7th May 1961. The background to the VC and also the use of his name on a Claughton, then Patriot loco is here Ernest Sykes (VC) - Wikipedia 45537 was a Nuneaton engine from December 1960 and withdrawn in June 1962. (SLS). It went to Crewe Works (RO) where it was scrapped in September 1962.

Although in general I don't subscribe to manipulating original images that water crane growing out of the smoke box is a bit, let's say, ugly. I therefore painted it out and I think the image looks a lot better better for it. (Tim asked me to do this for a couple of his photos, not including this one.)

Once more you have stirred memories of my early youth, Brian. As one of many lads of my era I belonged to the Ian Allan Locospotters Club and went on one of their outings to Crewe Works in the late 1952 (I believe.). I joined the special train at Trent Junction - long gone now - and travelled along the former NSR route to Crewe. The first loco I saw as within the station confines as we drew to a halt at Crewe was 40653 with it's unique Dabeg water heater. I believe that for most of it's service it was allocated to Northampton until final transfer to Crewe North before withdrawal.

For once I have been able to supply a more or less accurate year -memories and old age do not mix well :( - but I have a record that Ivatt 2-6-2T's 41310-11-12 were in the erecting shop in the final stages of construction. As these locos were of a batch all allocated immediately to the Southern Region in May 1952, the likelihood of my seeing any of them in the normal course of 'spotting' in those days was somewhat more than remote! Thus I think it is fair to say that was the year of my visit. Trusting some of this my be of interest.

Thank you Dave @Dave Holt. Personally I prefer the "modified" version too but as the original remains available the purists can have the shot the way they like it too. I'm delighted you continue to enjoy the photos, Dave. Believe it or not I'm still scanning, but now colour slides and of a more recent vintage.

Roger @Roger Pound - smashing memory there and I'm glad I stirred it. Those Ian Allan Locospotters Trips were great fun although I never did as many as I'd have liked and never made it to Crewe. This memory will go with the photo of 40653 as such details are hard to find. It makes me wish I'd kept all my spotting notebooks! Having said which I'll bet you saw the subjects of the next few photos too, although they may not quite have arrived at the time of your visit.

LYR Class 23 0-6-0ST 51412 acting as Works Shunter in Crewe Works Yard on 7th May 1961. It had been allocated to the CME at Crewe in April 1947 and was withdrawn in September 1962. (SLS). It was scrapped at Crewe Works (WHTS) but we have no date.

LYR Class 11 0-6-0 52441 in Crewe Works on 7th May 1962. This was another Crewe Works Shunter being allocated to Mechanical Engineering at Crewe in June 1953 after a couple of months on loan. It was withdrawn in September 1962. (SLS). It was scrapped at Crewe Works (WHTS) during October the same year. (BR Database).

Another LYR Class 11 0-6-0 No 52312 as a Crewe Works Shunter on 7th May 1961. This was another allocated to the Mechanicals at Crewe Works in January 1954 after a month on loan. It was withdrawn in September 1962 (SLS) and scrapped at Crewe (WHTS) in October.

Another fantastic resource for the modeller. To get two views of the same loco on the same day is very rare. Great to see everyday working engines with twisted step treads, buckled coal rails and bent cab roof but no smile from the driver!

If only I modelled the L&Y in the 60's!

Thanks Brian. Unfortunately the only Aspinall 0-6-0 I have recorded for that time was 52141 which I most likely saw at Nuneaton where it was resident during from at least 1948 and through the early 50's. Nuneaton Trent Valley was a regular day out for me to see the WCML with its many attractions! The works shunter I do recall seeing on that visit to Crewe, because at the time I prized the 'cop', was the well-known Webb 0-6-0ST 3323, which I understand was finally withdrawn in May 1954.

Yes, I did think that later, after having located my LNER Wagons book.
Applying the line up to the top corner seemed to occur a bit often on the larger BR Minerals, esp. the 24.5T type.
