Hi Simon,
Many thanks, it will be a long time before it turns a wheel, so I've got a many years to get around to that!

A little more mild disagreement Brian. I have fortunately two useful volumes, the Prairie series are like hens teeth and a mint copy of one of them came my way just before Christmas.

I've run out of time to do any German photos today. More will follow shortly.
Apologies - I've run out of time to present any more German locos again. I may have an opportunity later this afternoon.

Hehe ;) - must keep the GW and BR folk happy :) :D:rolleyes:.

However, similar to your own, my dad's and WT members photos - it is nice to see photos from private collections taken from different viewpoints.

Makes you wonder how many other unpublished amateur railway photos exist in private collections which may sadly never see the light of day.

I quite agree, Dave. I have a modest collection but all are prints and the bulk of the negatives no longer exist. I could scan them in to my laptop but cannot enlarge them which makes them unusable for circulating being from 6"x 4" (mainly) originals - others even smaller....!
Unfortunately, technology to do this may exist but is beyond my skill set these days  .

Thank you Adam. Yes, we're still trying to find out why it was at Oxley but Dave may be right and Stafford Road may be the answer. Thanks for yours, Mark, as well. I look forward to seeing the loco at work.

Thanks for yours, Martin. I'll add your info when I write up the final entry. (I'm way in arrears with my book work for these photos. I'll have to take a break soon to get everything up to date). Well done in securing that Prairie book.

I agree with you, Dave, about the collections which have never been seen and probably never will. Tim's would never have been thrown away - well, not by his son or widow - but neither would they have had any sort of pubic airing without Tim's generosity in passing them on to me. I've bought a couple of small collections for pence from the junk bins at antiques fairs, probably coming from house clearances. I'll bet those represent a couple of % of what's been destroyed as of no £ value. Sadly such collections rarely have any accompanying information about date or location, so this may be just the forum on which to show them. (One day). :)

Roger - I'd love to offer to scan your prints and get the best out of them that I can. (I've produced decent scans from prints previously). I'll not make that offer though, as I still have several thousand of Tim's colour images to deal with, even though most of those are post 1968 and a relatively small proportion are of railways.

Today to the ECML.

A2/3 60516 Hycilla with a 50A York shed plate and Scarborough Flyer head board backing out of Kings Cross on 22nd July 1961. It was allocated to York from July 1960 and withdrawn from there in November 1962. (SLS). It was scrapped at Doncaster Works by the beginning of April 1963.

A4 60031 Golden Plover Up from Edinburgh on a SO train at Harringay West on 22nd July 1961. We've debated this one being in London previously (see post #2671) when I said: "We have to question the identification, though, as 60031 was a St Rollox engine (although not at the time of this photo when it was allocated to Haymarket), although the nameplate looks as though it could be Golden Plover. The loco was withdrawn from St Rollox at the end of October 1965. (BR Database and SLS). It was scrapped at Campbells, Shieldhall, during December 1965. (BR Database)." I hope Mickoo will confirm whether the loco has a corridor tender which will probably be enough to confirm the identification.

Edit. I now have located a photo of 60031 on The Elizabethan at Kings Cross in August 1961 and with no electrification flashes. The loco was clearly no stranger to London and I'm minded to settle on this being 60031 without further discussion.

It's 044 155-0 coal burner - as is 044 569-2. 044 569-2 was built in 1943 as 44 1571 ÜK* and renumbered by the DB in 1968 to 044 569-2.

The DR (DDR) inherited the original 1941 built 44 569 (44 0569-2 in 1970) in 1949 on the formation of Deutsche Bundesbahn (BRD) and Deutsche Reichsbahn (DDR).

*ÜK = Übergangskriegslokomotiven - a sort of halfway house between Einheitslokomotiven and Kriegslokomotiven. Think of it in terms of details...

Einheitslokomotiven - the full monty - front skirts, front and rear cab side windows, feed pumps, pre-heaters, smoke deflectors, etc. Br 44 below.
einheits.jpg

Übergangskriegslokomotiven (half austerity?) - no front skirts, rear cab windows only, no smoke deflectors, in some cases no feed pumps and/or pre-heaters, some had disc pony and tender wheels. Br 44 ÜK below.
ÜK.jpg

Kriegslokomotiven (full austerity) - the bare minimum for an operational locomotive and mostly fabricated parts. Devoid of unnecessary details and an almost boxy-like appearence. Br 52 below.

Without question, the Br 44's were magnificent beasts, IMHO, irrespective of configuration. They were masters of their work and the longevity of their austerity 'Kreigslok' descendants, the Br 52 goes far to prove the soundness of the design. Please keep the pictures coming.

Yet again I'm in your debt, Dave. Thank you for the info about those 2-10-0s. There's more to come! Also Roger - thanks for your enthusiasm for these pictures.

A3 60039 Sandwich on the down SO Yorkshire Pullman at Harringay West on 22nd July 1961. Seen as long ago as post #200 60039 was a 34A Kings Cross engine and had been since April 1957 when it vacated the GC lines. It was withdrawn from Kings Cross in March 1963. (SLS). 60039 had only just received the trough deflectors, in April 1961. (SLS). It was scrapped at Doncaster Works in the April following withdrawal. (Rail UK).

Another A3, this time 60047 Donovan down light engine at Harringay West on 22nd July 1961. Seen previously in post #151 it was a Grantham engine at the time of the photo, moving to New England in October 1962 and withdrawal in April 1963. (SLS). Trough deflectors had only just been fitted- BR Database advises this was in July 1961 but gives no precise date. It went in to Doncaster Works in mid June 1963 for cutting up.

Bahnbetriebswerk (Bw) Rheine in March 1974 again and more of 2-10-0 044 569-2 on the turntable. We've established that the loco on the left in the first photo is 044 155-0 thanks to the information provided by Yorkshire Dave. Is there a reason for all the locos in these shots being smokebox first in to the shed whereas the subject loco is tender towards the shed building? Could it have been specially positioned for the participants in the shed visit?

I do not know of any reason for the positioning of locos chimney or tender first in the roundhouse, but the ventilation chimneys appear to be towards the rear of the building. One could imply that this is the reason it was preferred that the loco entered chimney first, allowing smoke to exhaust directly to atmosphere via the chimney sooner than drift around the door way. It's just a thought but to be honest I wouldn't put money on it ! No doubt someone may have a far more sound explanation.

Odds & Sods

60516 I think the caption might be changed to suggest the loco is waiting for the signal. It's definitely static with both crew hanging out the cab and solidly in mid gear. It was allocated to York 12/6/60, (Yeadon).

60514 This was the only A2/3 which never had the ugly rimless chimney changed to the more purposeful and aesthetic looking version as demonstrated on Hycilla above.

60039 new to Gateshead, by 1935 at Doncaster and sheds southwards on the ECML apart from 7/10/56 - 7/4/57 when it was at Leicester Central. It had a GO at Donny 12/4 -2/6/61 (Yeadon) which coincides with the RCTS date of fitting Witte deflectors. I think an actual date is impossible and the ex works dates was chosen. Wdn 4/3/63, cut up Doncaster 5/4/63.

60047 The RCTS gives a date of 7/61 for the fitting of deflectors which doesn't coincide with a recorded works visit so either Grantham shed fitters performed the addition or it nipped northwards on an X day exam. Another southern division engine all its rebuilt life. To New England 9/9/62, wdn 8/4/63, cut up Doncaster 19/6/63.

Please Sir, is that Sundays homework is finished?

As Roger has noted there's no reason for the position of the locos in the Ringlokschuppen. It will be down to the shed master and turntable controller - the latter having absolute control of locos coming on and off the turntable. Photos of other Ringlokschuppen show locos either tender or smokebox first.

I suspect 044 569-2 is backing down into the shed for a photo opportunity or being backed down after servicing. As this was a working shed visitors would have been aware of this and in conjunction to common sense would have also been told watch out for loco movements.

Back in the 1990s I visited Nürnburg Rangierbahnhof Ringlokschuppen (with the now defunct Fleischmann Model Railway Club) and at which we were reminded it was a working shed with diesel and electric locos coming and going as well as the shunting over the hump. We were pretty much left on our own to roam around with our common sense and awareness of surroundings - however there were a handful of DB officials around.

Thanks, Martin. Yes, I think we can consider your homework completed . :) As 60514 is on a train surely it'd be kept in forward gear even if stopped at signals, would it not? Must admit that I'd not noticed that though.

Also Roger and Dave, once more. We'll put the positions of the locos down to the shed foreman being of a neat and tidy disposition. As for people wandering around the shed and being told to beware of moving large lumps of metal, isn;t that self evident? I wonder if they'd be quite so cavalier in their assumptions nowadays. That'd be a bit dodgy bearing in mind that most people appear to consider any safety issue of their making is someone else's fault.

I enjoyed the Br 41's - nice to see another picture of these competent mixed traffic locos. The class were widely used by the DR in East Germany right up until the end of steam there on both local and longer intermediate passenger services. They feature consistently of some old VHS videos I still have.....!

Thank you Martin. I'd not applied your observations to the photos so apart from a cursory look hadn't related what was clearly a transposition of the comments if I'd studied them. I know just how easy it is to get details confused!

Thanks for yours too, Roger. I regret to say I've never seen any of those big German machines. When I could have been visiting Germany I was job focussed and restoring a house in my spare time (which also soaked up all available cash anyway). I went to Cologne a few times through about 1978 to the mid to late 80s to attend Photokina on behalf of my company but never had the time to extend my stay.

Jubilee 45596 Bahamas in Willesden Roundhouse on 22nd July 1961 carrying a 12B Carlisle Upperby shed plate. According to the record at the time it was allocated to Edge Hill and had been since November 1948. In August 1962 it moved to Stockport Edgeley where it was withdrawn in July 1966. (SLS). Locoshed books between April 1957 and December 1959 confirm the allocation to Edge Hill but frustratingly I have no Locoshed books for between 1960 and early 1963 to confirm whether and when it moved to Carlisle. The Locoshed books for October 1963 and June 1964 confirm a Stockport Edgeley allocation. It was bought by Bahamas Locomotive Society direct from BR in January 1967 after a period in store at Stockport. For details of the locomotive in preservation see 45596 Bahamas (LMS 5596 & BR 45596)

"The one before the last"... 9F 92219 at Old Oak Common Roundhouse on 26th July 1961. New to Cardiff Canton in January 1960 it went to Cardiff East Dock in September 1962 where it was withdrawn in August 1965, having been stored there since the previous July. (SLS). That's a working life of 5 years, 6 months and 10 days. What a disgraceful waste of a capital resource! It went to Woodhams at Barry It remained there until May 1985. It remains in scrapyard condition having had a less than successful time so far in preservation and is now at the Strathspey Railway since May 2023 where the intention was to store the loco before starting work on the restoration "a few months later". They are all taken at Rheine.

Photo no. 3 - looking towards Rheine Rangierbahnhof (marshalling yard) - you can see the hump in the centre middle distance.
Photo no. 4 - again looking towards Rheine Rangierbahnhof. The loco hauling the 'VW camper van special :)' is a Br 042 (2-8-2) Br 41 rebuilt for oil firing. The diesel in the right background is a Br 290 (V90).

I wondered about the loco in the third photo with the VW's. I did wonder if it was a Br03, a 4-6-2. The second leading wheel looks rather small diameter for a driving wheel as it would be on a 2-8-2, more the smaller size of a bogie wheel. To be honest one could sooner expect a Br41 than a Br 03 on that type of duty, but who knows? Dave might have better diagnostic facilities at his disposal than I, so it is just a tentative thought on my part.

It is clearly a BR41. It can be recognized because it's the only class with the distinctive step in the footplate (above the cylinders) and with a plank in front of the smokebox connecting both sides of the footplate.
