I wanted to get a bit more definition on the vents, so with more grime flooded in and wiped off it gives a greater depth. I just need to define some of the door furniture now.

So it is back to the GUVs. The BR models underframes just came as a set of etches. I managed to get a set of castings ( not normally available ) from MMP for a reasonable price and these have been supplemented with a few items from JLTRT such as the regulators and buffer beam pipe work. I had to scratch up some of the mounting points and framework, and also made up a representation of the brake rodding. Interestingly the BR ones took about three quarters of the time of the MMP one - which is a lot more comprehensive, but not as much a difference in time as I expected.


There is a substantial casting for the hook in the MMP kit, but I was not comfortable with a white metal hook. Having time to think about it, I cut a slot down the centre of the tapered section and soldered in with 100 degree solder a CPL coupling hook.

Hi Tony,
Be careful with any parts protruding behind the buffer beam in to the two voids...you won't get the body/roof securing nuts on! (As I found out!)

The castings we let you have were a favour as we had to rob them from made up kits and replace them later. I would like to stress, as I did at the time, that these are NOT normally available separately. BTW way the hook is almost pewter [just the smallest amount of lead added to keep the gating sizes down], and is plenty strong enough.

The beetle looks good Tony . Do you use acrylics or enamels for your weathering?

If I was weathering this I'd be drybrushing the door fittings with gunmetal to simulate areas where the paint has worn and highlight the heavily used grab irons and door handles with brass or aluminium (depending which was used on the prototype). Finally using a satin or gloss black to represent the grease on the door hinges and a touch of dark grey on the rubber door stops.

Thanks also for your observation, it's been sitting on the shelf for a few days and I've been thinking 'it needs something else...' I've been doing this for years - but still need a nudge in the right direction occasionally!

I've been tinkering with the weathering, it often takes a week or two to play around with the hand weathering and after Dave's nudge I've got to this. It's certainly getting a little more depth to it now.
