Finishing the wharf buildings

Spurred on by the Guage O Guild virtual show and modelling competition as advertised on here by @Jackie Kneeshaw and @Nick Dunhill, I've decided to put the finishing touches to the wharf buildings...

Nothing like a last-minute push to meet a competition (or show) deadline :))

5th July 2020 I make it looking back…
Looking forward to some update pics!
Ohhhhh the suspense…..

You could have at least lied to me and said it was early 2021...

I feel really bad now for ignoring the layout for so long.

So I've put Polsarrett to one side

And it's place on the trestles has been taken by Pencarrow's board 1.

Took a while to unbury it!

It’s also easy to say it how it is. keep up the good work!

I’m looking forward to the 7mm stuff making more progress, but the 4mm has been a most interesting diversion.

given that I am a natural butterfly, I have striven to stick to one scale, one region and one era for around 20 years. It works for me mostly, with a brief foray into Mr Stanier’s most wonderful Duchesses.

As I said earlier, a deadline is sometimes just the push you need to finish something off. The G0G virtual show and modelling competition was something I intended entering last year but didn't. This year I was determined to submit something, so three of Pencarrow's buildings have gone in.

Entry #1

Bodmin Wharf Building #1

In 1834 the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway Company opened their goods ‘wharf’ at Bodmin. The LSWR took over the line in 1847 and by 1865 they had cleared the storage buildings at Bodmin Wharf and built a conventional terminus “Bodmin North”. “Pencarrow” is based on a condensed version of Bodmin North and includes some demolished buildings, modelled in decrepit state.

My first entry is based on one of two storage buildings from the original wharf that were demolished by the LSWR. It is scratchbuilt and constructed almost entirely from plasticard, strip and embossed sheet. The dormer windows are modified brass square mesh. The rendered front is filler over embossed sheet. The distressed woodwork is scribed plastic. The side stonework is modified Wills sheet. The slate tiles are self-adhesive paper. Note: sagging roofs; rotten doors; broken guttering; failing render; rusting roof; ‘1834’ date block; and detailed stonework.

Entry #2

Bodmin Wharf Building #2

In 1834 the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway Company opened their goods ‘wharf’ at Bodmin. The LSWR took over the line in 1847 and by 1865 they had cleared the storage buildings at Bodmin Wharf and built a conventional terminus “Bodmin North”. “Pencarrow” is based on a condensed version of Bodmin North and includes some demolished buildings, modelled in decrepit state.

My second entry is based on one of two storage buildings from the original wharf that were demolished by the LSWR. It is scratchbuilt and constructed almost entirely from plasticard, strip and embossed sheet. The rendered front is filler over embossed sheet. The distressed woodwork is scribed plastic. The side stonework is modified Wills sheet. The slate tiles are self-adhesive paper. Note: sagging roof; boarded-up dormer; smiley face in the bi-fold door glazing; rotten doors; worn guttering; blocked-up doors and windows; and detailed stonework.

Entry #3

Bodmin North Prefab Building
In 1834 the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway Company opened their goods ‘wharf’ at Bodmin. The LSWR took over the line in 1847 and by 1865 they had cleared the storage buildings at Bodmin Wharf and built a conventional terminus “Bodmin North”. “Pencarrow” is based on a condensed version of Bodmin North and includes some of the LSWR and SR buildings.

My third entry is based on one of the prefab provender stores erected at Bodmin North by the SR. It is scratchbuilt and constructed entirely from plasticard, strip and embossed sheet. Note: concrete block base (separately shaped and applied); damp proof membrane (as per photo above made from bin bag plastic); asbestos sheeting with bolt fixings in metal frame; worn doors with hinge and lock detail; detailed interior with stored goods; gable end vents; guttering and down pipes; and asbestos roof (thinned down Wills sheet).

really great workmanship there Chris, I'm very envious.

regards

Mike

Thanks Mike, no idea if they are anywhere near good enough for the competition but they are the best finished buildings I have so far in 7mm. I'm my own worst critic so seldom see anything I do as being more than average and don't normally consider it worthwhile entering competitions. That mental state is something I'm trying to work on.

Who knows, if there's another virtual competition next year, and the grain store is finished by then, I may enter that then. I did toy with the idea of trying to finish it for this year's competition but that would have meant burning some serious midnight oil. As it was, just finishing off the guttering on the 2 wharf buildings took 6 hours. I must be mad.
