Lovely work, very open and spacious and just like the real world! Can I also ask, what are the overall dimensions - 4ft by ?

The ash ballast technique sounds like a good one to try out..... ;)

Cheers,
Mark

After trying it out on a test piece I have decided to go with the ash idea. The test piece has a puddle dug out (dry as yet), the tractor gives the idea of the result.

I have covered a small area by the Pt Way hut, and now need to dig out a few ruts and puddles in the 1.5mm card surface of the goods yard before proceeding with the rest.

Although not too evident in this photo, I had a go at the goods yard surface over the Weekend and although not everything went quite according to plan (does it ever?), I am fairly happy with the result, which gives a more random effect to the surface. Lots more to do.

Further rummaging in the 4mm drawer produced a goat. I was looking for something to go on the abandoned N/G line, and I think this fits the bill. Think I must also pay attention to the backscene, I was always rubbish at art!

Fabulous scene, the quietness, the slightly down-at-heel look of the buildings and trackwork. All show brilliant observation and insight, and ability to translate that into a three dimensional picture. Splendid!

The loco crew could have nipped inside for a quick cuppa with the porter!

Cheers,
Mark

Work on the fiddleyard is nearing completion, cassettes completed and the fiddle deck attached to the layout with hinges.
At home, the fiddleyard encroaches halfway across the doorway when erected, so is simply dropped down on the hinges when not in use. When in the raised position it is supported by a removable prop, part of which can be seen in the photo.
For transporting the layout, the fiddleyard is detached by removing the hinge pins.

Power to the cassettes is transferred by the clips shown, which also align the cassette

The water tank has come in for a bit of weathering, and ye olde Airfix 14XX is doing sterling service on test runs.
The exit to the fiddlestick is very evident from this angle, taken from under the bridge.

Progress continues albeit at a rather modest pace, but things are gradually coming together as I had visualised. I tend to do more planning on the baseboard than on paper or computer, and whilst I admire those who plan everything to the nth degree beforehand, I tend to crash on with a basic vision and a sketch on the back of an envelope.
A hedge along the area behind the cattle pen disguises the join twixt layout and backscene and negates the need for a boundary fence, which of course is hidden within the boscage.

The area between the running in board and the cattle pen is earmarked for a lamp room and gents urinal, based on Tanat Valley structures. Although there are no signals to illuminate at Cwm Caradoc, the buildings are oil lit, and maybe there will be a Tilley lamp on the platform.

This lovely layout is coming on well. Cwm Caradog means Caradog Valley, but I dont know what Caradog means. I lived on Lon Caradog 35 years ago.
