A mate popped round yesterday with his dapol western so it was good to compare the two, one thing I noticed on the dapol model was some extra piping on the bogie and the sand pipes, both of which heljan left off.
So out with a bit of copper wire and I've added the missing pipes

I'm going to order a set of couplings off Laurie griffin for this loco.

I've been having a good look at the western this evening and I've moved the headboard clips up a bit, View attachment 27348
I used this picture as my reference,

I think the head code box needs to be a few mm higher as well but I'm not going to start carving the front up

Hmm, I'm not so sure. Not because I can see a different thing than you, but because I wouldn't trust the photos as something to work from. Note, for example, the relative positions of the lamp irons...
If you know what you're looking for (I do, a little) there are obvious cues to lens distortion in both photos. I'm not surprised, the top photo will have been taken on a modern camera at close range with the camera (hopefully, but I'm not convinced) on its 'macro' setting.
The lower photo is definitely 'vintage', there's a softness away from the centre of the image and a touch of 'pincushion' distortion too - this latter will effect the way that lengths and distance are perceived although it's pretty good for its era; at least it's sharp! It's likely to be taken with a short standard lens, possibly 35mm, a length which is unpopular these days.
For a start I'd get the centre of each image the same if you're looking to do a comparison. then you want the lens length to be the same and the focus on the same point. It helps if the lens architecture is the same too.
As you can see it's a bit of a mindfield, but at the very least I suggest being wary of any effects you observe...

Thanks for posting the second photo though - it's the clearest view I've seen of the gaskets around the headcode box glazing!

I know you shouldn't but I was comparing it to the Dapol model yesterday and plenty of pics of
Courier up the SVR and maybe the lamp irons head board clips and head code box are all wrong,
Personally I think the head board clips look better one they are raised slightly and this also means the yellow panel will be slightly higher once done compared to the stock model.
The head code box is the biggest visual thing to me but I really don't fancy tackling that so that's as far as it's going to go.
It would be good if we had the actual measurements taken from the real engine.
Then we could get all the bits in the right place
Modeling aye? I thought it was supposed to be fun !!!! Happy new year all.

5043 has just returned from London on the afternoon 3.55PM capitols United. She's been down to the turntable for turning and is now awaiting a top up from the water crane.
She worked up to London this morning on the 10.00 departure from Cardiff the Red Dragon. There and Back on one tender full of coal. Lurking ominously behind is one of Cantons latest edition in the form of a Hymek.

Reminds me of a couple of articles in RM years ago.

The first was called "Weybourne" and featured a southern shed with small station on two levels.

The second was called "The axe falls on Weybourne" and had loads of atmosphere as the owner cleared the depot before dis-assembling it to start a new one.

Your pics are quite emotive.

Thanks for the replies, it's surprising how many different angles you find even on such a small model.
I will only have canton until the middle of April and then it moves to its new home so I'm getting all the pictures in now. It's going down the model club room next week so I won't take as many pictures of it after then.
It's a little sad but I'm itching to get going on Ranelagh bridge and il have my new photo plank to get going.

Add all these castings,

Plus Severn mill numbers and works plates, Pete Harvey etched steps and especially commissioned timkin etched axle box covers
& hopefully we will have a lovely super detailed hymek.

They are prepared to sell the castings separately & now after much badgering they might start doing a dedicated detail pack.
They do make a big difference especially on the Hymek.
