I really hope I've not offended David!! I never thought I'd be building GW stuff, the things you have to do to earn a living!

The other DJP has done a nice job in any case..

Not at all! Just a little jibe at my least favourite railway. Actually I quite like some of the rolling stock - its the locos I can't take! And they say the new Class 70s are ugly!!! Each to their own I suppose.

Best,

DJP

After 4 days of coach bogies, I needed a change, so here are tortoise controllers ( designed by the late John Bailey )for Barmouth, Heyside and Sheerness. Electronics was where I started my career (? - isn't a career something going fast and out of control....?) and I fall back into it easily..

Oh dear, have you seen anybody about your affliction? :-(

Maybe you are right - but I suppose I like to see railways as something with a future as well as an interesting past!

I suggest signing up to the Railcams web site and watching the York1 camera for an hour or two in the week - particularly at night. You might be impressed! As the famous US Railroader Don Ball Jnr. said 'as long as we're talking steel flanges on steel rails its interesting' - and the great thing is that its happening now!

16 ton minerals and the white tipper line. I can never get the transfers to look right and I can't paint a straight line for toffee. Jonathan Matthews suggested a white pen from Smiths - I found a UNI Posca - whatever that means. What a great idea! It was a few minutes work and I can tidy up the scrabby ends later.

There is weathering and rusting to do yet, but in the early 60's they will not be too decrepit. Right one is transfer, top one is done. left one has had the first line drawn:-

Fair enough but drawing a straight white line with a lining pen on the side of a flat wagon should not prove so tricky ... I can see a little tutorial in the offing :)

I'm one for making models robust, and the coach electrical connectors come as a tiny set of castings. So they all had to be drilled 0.5mm - for the cable and to make a mounting spigot for the storage socket at floor level. If they were just glued on with a butt join, I could see them getting knocked off.. So here are the bits before cutting from the sprue with a piercing saw.

Not at all Cliff - I log the hours of all my builds. This one took 150 hours to build to the painting stage- bearing in mind that I have built two previously. Then it's a days work to re-assemble it, finish off and test.

The Toplights are nearly there, and I wanted to portray a late 50s dirty but not decrepit condition of the coaches without detracting from Warrens excellent paint job.

So spot the difference, the upper side has had a dirty wash applied and wiped off. The residual grime adds that extra depth and realism. The lower side is pristine and lovely, but more suited for a display case than a working model...

I've been multitasking and whilst I'm waiting for things to happen on the Toplights, there is a background task numbering and weathering 25 or more minerals. Along with painting some Modelu figures it's all pretty busy on the workbench.

If anyone has any unbuilt ABS Iron Ore Tippler kits for sale - I'd be interested.

I decided to use CPL alarm gear for the coach ends - it is beautifully cast and looks excellent. CPL products are now owned and sold by Paul Bambrick:- http://www.cplproducts.net/

I agree with you about the alarm gear and have fitted it to a few of my coaches. I've had only one problem, and that's probably down to clumsy handling, but the "flags" which are (as they should be) just proud of the coach sides tend to get caught on extraneous bits and pieces, are bent and with straightening each time that happens eventually break off. In fact I've now taken to removing the cast flags and soldering my own on the ends with 70 degree low melt or even glue which tends to break away if caught up on something, allowing for easy replacement.
