Hi Tony,

The springs are a great improvement, how have you made them removable ? Also I like the look of the horn guides, whose are those please?

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick -
centre ones are removable - 14BA screws in to the 'ears'. Horn guides are Slaters 7960B, non adjustable as they come, but I like them..

Tony

Hi Tony,

Are you leaving out the springs in the horn blocks until you have completed the running chassis, and do you use the springs Slaters have supplied?

I am just putting an additional parts list together for a 2251 class which I hope to start soon, and the Slaters h/blocks are rather tempting.

Cheers,

Martyn.

Hello Martyn - this is where I confess - I'm not sure! I used these in my WD, I'm not even sure I bothered fitting the springs! I shall have to check...

Nor do I bother making them adjustable - sacrilege I know, but it works for me... I'm sure it can be done though..

Best Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,

Well that is quite a confession, although I suppose as long as you work to a set datum line things should be fine and a smooth track bed of course .

Cheers,

Martyn.

I suppose the main question is 'are all the wheels on the track?', they must be, because the J94 ran round my mate's layout for over half an hour with only 4 pick ups connected without a hiccup. There was no wobbling or jerky movement, so that's good enough for me. I could spend hours getting each axle within a micron of the axle centre line, it's not worth the time and even the best laid track will have undulations. So as long as the chassis on it's wheels will sit on my plate glass without rocking wildly, and the loco performs properly, I'm happy..

Oh Yeah! I'm living on the edge!

Cheers
Tony

Har! Someone said to me you get slower when you get over 40, my intention is to speed up...

Passing through the shops is this 0-4-4 after suffering erm.. 'collision damage'. So it's not camera distortion this time and after dismantling, I've been able to straighten things out a little... It won't ever be perfect, but the real things used to get pretty battered...

I quite like doing repairs, and I seem to get more and more challenging jobs!

So there we are: job done, and just a little more touching in to do. I had to pull off the bunker section completely to get the various battered parts straightened out. It will never be perfect again, but it is straight and it now has character and a bit of history...

Meanwhile the Ivatt is going for a track test today, sounds racy doesn't it.. but it will just go round and round for half an hour on Curzon Street, whilst we have a coffee. Then it is off to Warren Heywood for painting.

I've had some bizarre requests of late, politely declined or passed on to people, better able to deal with them. My favourite so far has been one asking if I could repaint to BR lined green livery - wait for it! - an HO Big Boy. No, really.

Can't wait to see the Ivatt painted....with Warren painting it you just know it's going to look beautiful!

Having said that, it looks beautiful now!

Let's wait and see what happens when you reach 40 then! :)

Ugly looking thing... Love it!

It'll be fun trying to couple up if ever it needs to do an ECS turn on the roster..

I'm on unfamiliar ground here, so this latest project is proving a little taxing as I don't much about these coaches! A trawl of the net has turned up some useful photos, but whilst the sides are away with Warren Heywood I've been tackling the underframes. I've added a representation of the dynamo tensioner and the little 'stirrup' safety loops for the trussing. In BR days the battery boxes seem to have had a plate added on the bogie side - to protect from water spray maybe? So I've added that from brass strip. Just the brake gear and a few other details to finish off.

In the meantime I've been working through my unfinished minerals, numbering patching, weathering and preparing for loads. I couldn't get the Iron Ore black patches right and ended up stripping, masking and spraying them. I can't get a straight line with a brush to save my life.. Those Lionheart 16 tonners look a little blue to me. I actually re-sprayed a couple..

Meanwhile 68074 did a turn at the Keighley show on Hollowbeck shed with some of her sisters..

Thanks for your appraisal, think I will take the more straightforward route

Mine will be a Standard as it has to be a Bidston shed loco for hauling Summers hoppers

Apologies if this isn't news but Warren Shephard does a kit for the Summers wagons.

(Taken right back to childhood, the Fender valley, Rockers' bridge, and Oxton before the Townfield estate...)

I try not to go anywhere on Bank Holidays, so I'm on my third day of fishbelly bogie construction. The etchings are marked with DJP, so if it is Dave Parkins design, that's why they fit together so well. There are a lot of bits, so each bogie is a vehicle in it's own right!

Me - design a GWR Bogie!!! Sorry - not guilty.

I used to actually like the Mallard Models ones in their Toplights [which I thought were the best Toplights produced]. Built loads of them back in the 1970s when I was Col. R J Hoare's coach builder. I don't know anything about these though - sorry.
