I managed to do quite a bit more over the weekend.

Here is 40138, the body has now been out together and filled and sanded etc and all the detailing parts added, however there are two bits missing from the front end can anybody spot them ?
I managed to get a coat of primer on it yesterday and its looking good now.

There is not a lot to add here everything fits together very well and just gets glued on.
I did notice one thing though for 40164, the horn grills are on horizontally not vertically so not sure whether to bother making this mod.
The other thing I noticed is that most centre headcode and and split head code 40s have EE style lamp brackets as below but the kit only includes 2 so if you are doing one of these you will need to ask Laurie for another pair, mine are on their way.

Here's a closer view of the front end.

I have also started detailing the bogies here's number one bogie

One pet hate I have with JLTRT diesel kits is that the multiple working bits have a peg at the bottom of each part and huge thick piece of rubber tube to fit between them that must be a scale 3 inches thick. In reality the the cable between them is less than an inch thick so should be about 0.7mm thick. I cut off the peg and very carefully drill a 0.7mm hole in each of the parts and use a piece of copper wire painted black to represent the cable. You will be able to see it later in the build. Here's a view from the other side. One of the changes I will be making is to use some MMP air control pipes, again the kit ones are far too thick where as the MMP ones look about right.

Windy wipers, door clips, head board brackets (not all locos fitted),

If not any of them please do tell.

Ozzy

The wind screen wipers haven't been fitted but are in the kit, however the head board brackets are not in the kit and were fitted 40138 so something that is going to have to scratch built.

What are Door clips ?

What you have used for the lampbrackets are headboard brackets for the disc version, see picture on D212. I too used these though but added a strip underneath to make them a bit better. The only ones you can get that are correct are what DJH do, but you can't get them as a spare :(

Thats true but those look more like the correct lamp iron than any of the others in the kit adding the bit underneath improves things.
What are the triangular bits on 212 as these are not in the kit either and they appear to be a moulded on item in some of the kits JLTRT do.

Thanks Ozzy, Brian and Mick

Everything is now clear about the front end of 40138, I need to scratch build some head board headboard brackets.

I went to the Nene Valley Railway to have a look at 40135 as it is one the visiting locos.
It has convinced me that the exhausts stand too proud on the roof of the kit. Here's a photo of the roof.

Richard,

Not sure but it may be the size of the files. Try reducing the image size, I think the instructions recommend 800 x 600 pixels which produces files under 200Kb. The file sizes do make a noticeable difference in the loading speed on the iPad.

Your 40 roof image is there, but it's huge! I expect the software won't let you put it in the post as it's too big.

Here goes with a second attempt.

Here is a photo of 40135's roof.

40135 (11 of 3).jpg

2 things to notice here the exhaust vents are fairly thin and the fan mesh sits on top of the roof. Its hard to find roof shots on locos in service in the 80's but the few I have found show that this is the case back then. SO the exhaust vents on the JLTRT roof are too thick and the fan mesh sits in the roof not on it.

The exhaust vents are easy to fix like so

One filed down the other still waiting to be attacked with the big bastard file.

The roof mesh though is another problem does anyone know if Shaw plan do one ?

I hadn't noticed the hole in the buffer beam under the left hand multiple working socket before, I don't think anything is missing.

If you are going to the sort of ends you are, why not bsome genuine brass mesh off ebay? Cheap for a pack, almscale, and FAR nicer then ANY etched mesh!

I have some for Falcon, if and when, and some for my Westerns........

The best I found came from a place called "Let's get meshy".

On ebay, many are sold with a "hash" number.
The number corresponds to the number of threads per liner inch. As that rises, the wire diameter gets lower. The stuff I have for falcon is almost dead scale....but WOVEN like the real thing.

I have had a look on ebay and there isn't much certainly nothing that appears to be the right size, can you tell me what size you bought.

Thanks
