Yestrerday I broke the 9F out of it's bubble wrap after four months packed away for the house move. I managed twenty minutes on a little job but hope to spend a couple of hours on it today when I work out where I had got to on the build.

The WDLR Companion is a truly excellent book, which along with the earlier WDLR Album make a superb record of this ephemeral system. They are a fitting tribute to all involved in their conception, construction and operation. WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM.

A white Christmas in Brazil? Did you finish Thomas in time for Santa to deliver to Pedro?

Unfortunately no. Thomas needs his buffers, valance and lining doing. A face is also required. I sent emails to a couple of people at shapeways. One replied but never came back once I told him the size. So it looks like I will need to make one myself.

You might make the face from Das - if you don’t stick the smokebox door in, you could make the face with a “plug” that fits the smokebox “hole”, perhaps with a dab of Uhu, or even blu tak. That way, when he grows out of “faces”, he can pull it off, and put the proper door on, and have a “serious” model.

We built a Mavis (about 18 years ago, then about 3) for MasterD based on an Atlas chassis, and a Toby (about 14 years ago, as reported in the Gazette then about 5) for MissD, based on a Lima bogie. Didn’t do faces for either of them. Fitted both with cheapo Lenz decoders which ensure that Vmax was “safe”, I got them a Lima Toad, and a few Big Big minerals, fitted with decent wheels and oversize 3-links which worked well with little hands.

We still have the locos, though neither child is very interested...

Thanks Simon, I'd thought about DAS but it's hard to come by here. I have found a ceramic type air drying putty. But it's more my ability to actually carve the stuff.

Additive manufacture is the way to go!

Blobs of clay, perhaps on top of a disc of clay stuck to a disc of plasticard.

Or chicken out like I did...

So, for the first time since August I've got the modelling gear out in the re-arranged train room to do some actual modelling. Taken ages to find everything again, with many modelling tools finding their way into the garage or DIY toolboxes.

Thought i'd do some work on these:

The only issue is I can't find my fag packet sketches. But then I remembered taking a photo and posting on here:



Obviously the originals will be found once the buildings are complete...

Cheers Dan, decided I needed a domestic DIY break for a few weeks. Most of the day was spent finding everything again and wondering what to have a go at and where in earth I'd got to. Would be nice to get the four walls and a roof on the stores before getting back to decorating.

Popped into Ian Allan in Birmingham on the way to the station this evening as I just missed one train and had 20mins to kill. Not been in for ages so good to see a few new books of interest, including this one from Irwell Press (IP):



This was of personal interest to me so I bought a copy. Personal interest? Well, back in 2007/8 I contributed to the re-writing and significant expansion of the IP North Cornwall Railway book, originally by the late David Wroe. Really enjoyed the experience and one of 'my' chapters covered locos - of which the N Class were a key component.

Anyway after that book IP approached a friend and I to write the "Book of the Maunsell Moguls". Unfortunately, despite research being well underway, wider circumstances prevailed and we had to withdraw from the project. Something I've always regretted.

So I'm really pleased that IP have finally got it produced some 10 years later. Looking forward to seeing what Ian and Richard have done with the book when I get home. I'm sure it will be up to the excellent standard of other books from the series.

Yeah - like all the other ones in the series it's a bit of a coffee table book, but has some interesting photos. The Peter Swift book is better in my opinion, as is the 'Profile of the Southern Moguls'.

That's the impression I got of the Maidment book Steph. Nothing really jumped out at me as being particularly worth buying it for. The data in the IP book makes that worthwhile on its own IMO.
