Cheers Simon, Graham ,
I’m prepared to wait for a deluxe version :D . I think the Slaters kit is for the earlier 28xx rather than the 2884 which I prefer. And the Scorpio version has a weird form of compensation which incorporates moving side frames...

Thank you Simon,

That's reassuring to know, I'm sure the Gucci version will be worth the wait.

Martyn,
seeing your avatar, do you have any detail photos of the beast? I have yet to organise a photo survey to get the details correct.

Evening Simon,

I'm afraid I have not got any detailed photos of the class at all, the avatar was poached from an image I stumbled across a while back. I was lucky enough a few years back to see 3850 at Minehead, and what a beautiful loco she was, I was not prepared and had no camera with me that day. Sorry I cannot be of help right now, but I will see what I can find out in the next few weeks and let you know.

Regards,

Martyn.

By the way, there are some nice examples for ballast weathering from the viewpoint of the footbridge!

Paul,
thank you. The fourth photo has already raised two observations to check if they are as design or are preservation changes (the outer edge of the splashers being filleted and the 3D nature of the valve access covers on the front drop plate).

Simon,
I have looked at some old photos of when they were in service, and they all look like the splashers have that fillet from the design stage. The valve access covers on 3850 look like they might have been replaced, as in the library photos the top of the covers do not look like they have that curved line to follow the shape of the drop plate, and are notably smaller.

The GA shows a sharp edge to the splashers! Hence why I like to have photos of the object that I am drawing open on the second screen or the tablet. Those covers are just weird!

They look like cast iron to me. Quite common on other railways.

Amazing photos Brian, albeit a very sad and sorry looking scrap pile. The third photo from the bottom shows 3850 with the smaller original valve access covers, nothing like the ones which now adorn her in preservation.

True, Martyn, although it's fair to say that those still carrying cabside numbers at Southall were still staggering on for another few weeks.

Your comment about 3850 reinforces the truism that it's important to get hold of photos pre-preservation.

I was one of the Heavy Freight Gang which restored 3822 from circa 1980... I believe that the only visible metal work which was replaced on the engine at that time was the lagging on the boiler and firebox front together with the cab floor and the cladding plates for the cylinders. Not the same story for the tender which I think was not the one which was allocated to 3822 when that engine went into Barry scrapyard. Irrespective of the origin of the tender most of the metal work of the tender tank, including the well tank, was replaced in the early 1980s with the assistance of the Ford Motor Company - I think that we retained the outer tank sides... the cove and raves were new as was most of the coal space and the rear deck.

Returning to the original layout thread, I decided to make some coping stones for a retaining wall out of some DAS modelling clay yesterday.
Quite therapeutic when you have Radio 2 playing the top 40 hits in the background, especially as the year was 1973, I was 12 at the time!
Oh well only another 84 to make.....
