There is not much room inside the buffer beam and a desire to 'hide' the incorrect screw head.
A way. Get screws of the appropriate diameter and then check the length for a full nut on the inside. Now allow another nut length and remove the thread until the nut slides over. Use a counter sunk screw let into the buffer beam then solder in. Put in place the put on nuts which will slide over the reduced section then screw on to tighten. The reduced section makes getting the on easy with fingers or long nose pliers as space is tight.
