Good stuff. Except I'll bet there's more to come...

Have you checked that the axles holes in the chassis line up? You may wonder why I ask this question.....

all I need to find out is if 69808 had one!

Came across this photo of 69808. Are you going to model the kink in the front valance or have ACE done that for you...? :))

Looking at the bunker there appears to be a seam halfway down, however on enlargement it appears to be a mark on the slide.

Another photo of 69808 here and here - again, looking at the handrail it appears you could build the kit from the box without any modification :) .

(apologies if you already have copies of these).

I trust you are going to replicate that wonderfully wonky handrail?

1264 failed on Tuesdays runing session, so a 4F stood in for it. The loco was tight on one of the 6' radius curves, so I needed more play on the rear drivers. For the first time I was unable to remove the axle screw, so I used a piercing saw to cut off the axle behind the wheel . Once free, I was able to carefully drill out the screw...

Tony

looks like you have been able to save the wheels, well done, but why drill from the front having sawn off the axle behind the wheel?

Would it not have been safer/easier to drill from the back? (the front isn't flat of course but a bit of packing...)

I think this would have removed the remnant of the screw and axle, and thus released the wheel.

There was some more progress with the A5. The length of the running plate has been corrected and the wider bunker section grafted on. I've also added the valences.

I was over enthusiastic with the file so had to graft in some new sections for the curve in of the running plate below the cab door. That can then be carefully files to shape this time.

I didn't get the saw right against the back of the wheel Simon, so there was still some axle in place. There was a hole in my block of wood to accomodate the remaining stub whilst I drilled...

your experience was put to good effect on my workbench too!

On The plus side, I have found Slaters axles to be made from quite a ( soft ) metal and a piercing saw soon makes short work of the axle.

Oh yes - they are pretty soft steel and easy to cut through...

More progress on he A5, with the tanks just placed in position. The bottom edges of the tank had etched tabs to fit in non existent slots in the running plate, so those were filed off. There were also etched marks for the valence, miles inboard of where it should be. The valance only projects about half an in above and below the running plate. I don't think there is anything in the kit for the tanks faces inside the cab....

Back after a break, and with some time to do more battle with this kitI've just tacked the superstructure together for the moment. I've not found any frame spacers in the kit, so I'm chasing them up. I need to get the wheels in to the frames so that I can configure the cab floor..
IMG_1261.JPG

I managed to get the beading on made from soft half round wire. It sits on top of the panel edge. The etchings don't all match the instructions, or each other for that matter, so we are in assisted scratch building territory..

Despite the trials and tribulations, it's coming along well and looking very neat.
Interesting that you mention possible cab floor issues relating to the wheels. I had some problems with the C13, not so much with the wheels as with the frames and a spacer I had fitted which, due to my ineptitude, ended up protruding through the cab floor slightly and now forms part of it.
Good luck with your assisted scratch build.
Dave.

Thanks Dave -
I'm juggling that with other tasks I'm doing on the railway, but she will be a worthwhile addition to the fleet.
