I think you find they are something to do with the central door locking.

Thanks for the replies - must have a lot of would be 'outriders' in Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire.
Whatever they are, they look rather deadly to me as they present a 'cutting edge' and could cause more problems than they may supposed to be preventing. I have some 5 thou brass shim which will hopefully fit the bill, we shall see in due course.

on this unit, all of the doors are still usable as here

the only shot that I can see on Flickr with the doors open. You can see in the earlier link, that the 'baffle' is over every stepboard and every door has been 'plated over' at the bottom. The Sandite/Route Learner 121s had doors taken out of use to suit operational needs etc, but 121034 and I think 121020 which also does the Aylesbury - Princes Risborough shuttle, are still more or less 'as built' as far as opening doors are concerned.

The chassis for both units are now more or less complete - wiring still to modify and the lamp iron brackets to fit - very vulnerable, so they will go on last of all .

the first coats of Hobby Holidays bought weathering washes have been applied over the Railmatch Frame Dirt - more to go on over the weekend.
cruel close-up of the jumper cables - heat-shrink sweated onto some 0.7 brass wire, (used as a former) whilst turning the tubing all the time to stop it bonding with the wire. A push fit onto the spigots on the castings and held in place with a dab of superglue with a short piece of 26swg copper wire down the middle as a former. I'm quite pleased with the result.
Taking both units to the Club this evening to check all is well, then its on to the bodies and off with the existing paint, door handles and grab handles, filling in the gaps around the headcode boxes, remove the existing partitions, marl out and fit the horizontal handrails under the cab windows.......................................................................

As mentioned on Dibateg's thread, I have spent quite a few hours scraping the green paint off of one of the 121s as I will be fitting the new window frames, which will need painting and there is no way that a colour match could be achieved (nor in fact the option of pre-painting the new frames prior to fixing) so off it all came -
bar that on the gutter, left on as a precaution against marking the roof in any way.
the opportunity was taken at this stage to fill in any gaps around the headcode boxes, (final sanding/rubbing down still to do). The holes for the door bumps and the missing handrails were made using a little brass plate jig with holes set for passenger or drivers door centres, a slot cut in it to centre it over the lower door hinge and a piece of angle soldered on the bottom to maintain the correct height of the holes. Holes will also need drilling for the door handles, Bachmann only solder on a piece of brass strip. Flats will be filed onto the long grab rails.
I am undecided as to the door bumps - dress making pins or brass rod - the lower body stripe is centred along this line and whatever choice I make, will have to be fitted before the line goes on - again whether painted or transfer applied.
Lets see what this week brings..................

Now fitted the missing handrails around the front of the cab
and the inner ends of the door hinges and handrails ground down to enable the glazing to fit better.
The likely completion programme (no timescale to apply) will be to fit the 'anti-surfing' boards, prime the whole body, followed by the top coats, inside and out, then the glazing, cab interiors, directional lighting, partitions, seating and finally, door furniture, lining and lettering.

many thanks for the link. I have a photo of it 'on file' obtained from I know not where, it is DM395280 - one of the two Kitchen Car conversions that BR did in the late 50s and is labelled 'QXW' I will try and find out a bit more on these two vehicles, but don't hold your breath!

you come up with some interesting liveries which can be pieced together to build up some history - 1986 Blue/Grey on the Southern Region through 1992 with 'Carmine and Cream with full yellow end' on the Eastern Region to Corus at Scunthorpe in 'red primer' in 2008.

A 'day out' yesterday for my green 121 which is currently going through the paintshop - the Wirral OGG Open Day
highlighting the fact that the next job would appear to be to repaint the interior, replace the windows, partitions and seating. I think that this model was via a well known model shop's workshops (I bought it via the GOG Sales section in the Newsletter) but the windows were (toilet) paper thin and needed replacing - and to do that, the seats had to come out (they were stuck in with cow glue or the like) I also took the opportunity to take out the partitions as they were in the wrong place! The exterior paintwork is very good, so I'm being very careful so as not to spoil it, this means that it will be modelled as pre Blue era so that the replacement window frames are still a thing of the future and therefore not required. It will have directional lighting via a DCC decoder.
the Mk1s in the foreground are Bachmann, and belong to the Club Chairman.
The layout boards in the background, currently supporting the empty display stands are part of the on-going project for New Brighton, which will hopefully join the DCC lines via a junction located at the top right of the picture.

Just caught up with this thread some excellent work as usual . Do Westdale supply the detailing parts that are omitted on the Bachmann model as a kit ?

Westdale do some detailing parts as accessory packs:
windscreen wipers, etched windows, jumper cables, speedo, drivers desk, Oleo buffers, bogie steps (wide and narrow) and seats (double and triple)
and if you speak very nicely to Dick Taylor (Westdale proprietor) he might sell you the whitemetal castings for the chassis as well - he would really like you to buy his complete kit.
As has been noted elsewhere, Dick Taylor will be taking a sabbatical next year, so it may well pay you to contact him sooner rather than later - no website or email, just phone - 01628 482493
The partitions in the Bachmann model are in the wrong place and need repositioning, the partitions behind the driver are missing and Peter Clark does a 1st Gen DMU cab fitting which includes the partition, floor and desk all in one etch + the whitemetal fittings to suit.

They're looking very nice - what have you used for the anti-surfing board then? As an alternative I got some hard 5thou nickel-silver from Eileens, this might be less prone to distortion.the anti surfing boards make handling very awkward, as being only 5thou thick, they distort as soon as you look at them

it's brass, originally a 100' coil x 2 7/8inches wide, there must be a good 25' left, if I have used more than 4'since acquiring it nearly ten years ago, it is an overstatement!
Many thanks for your offer, but once the body is on the chassis, there should not be a problem. I have scored a 'bend' line on the front to push the board out and another, 2mm from the end on the reverse to enable me to dress the board over the footstep.
