7mm Ressaldar's Paintshop - Bachmann 121 - W55034 (x2)

Just completed the model having applied the orange lining at gutter level and across the ends.

The build was by my good friend Brian Flanagan, all I have done is supply and fit the heater ventilators (from Easybuild), the ETH equipment (from JLTRT), the EWS and triple head logo (Fox via Ian G of this parish) the wording on the ends and the fleet number are my first venture into 'homemade' transfers - via Microsoft Project and colour laser printed at the local print shop onto clear Crafty Computer paper, plus my usual track plans across the tables.

Paintwork is Acid8 etch primer followed by Halfords Satin Black on the chassis and bogies

Obscured windows are scratched with a fibreglass brush

Blinds were copied from an example of a roller blind on a well known website, blown up to A4 and printed onto Microsoft Project, then two sheets were glued back to back, left to dry then cut to size for the various locations.

the white edging to the steps is the narrowest Trimline tape then the edges were touched in with Tamyia acylics. The orange lining is HMRS pressfix.

Following a comment on the NCX posting by Richard regarding the ETH cable diameter, I have used shrink tube on this model and above is a piece of 2.5mm dia. shrink tube, shrunk onto 1.0mm brass rod on the left hand end and onto 0.7mm rod on the rightthe centre piece has not had heat applied to it. I will take a close-up of the ETH later and post that for comparison with the NCX version. I had not cleaned up the rod before shrinking the tube and this may have helped the 'adhesion' of the tube to the rod. The tricky bit is holding the model while applying the heat to the tube and avoiding touching the paintwork:eek:

It will get a good run at the Club this evening and then we'll see what its destiny is after that.

cheers

Very nice Mike

At what level of weathering is this having ?.

Have you done a blue & grey saloon ?. If so, have you any piccies ?.

Hi all, many thanks for your comments and likes, much appreciated.:thumbs::thumbs:

The weathering paints and potions will not be used, unless I'm asked to break them out. I was asked to weather the first one that I built and it seemed that I never stopped being told that they were always clean - my answer was 'the customer is always right'

There are only a few of the liveries that were carried that I have not yet done, so watch this space, as requested, here are a couple of shots of some of the previous versions that have been through the paintshop.

As promised above, I attach a close up of the ETH cable formed using 'shrinktube'

IMG_4540.JPG

and I think that there is an improvement over using the tubing supplied by JLTRT, I may try the float tube on the next ETH fitting for comparison purposes. The spigot on the buffer beam fitting was removed and replaced by a piece of 0.7mm brass rod fitted into a new hole.

Mike, regarding the ETH cable, could you not make the cable shape and length in one or the other wire size, I.E. form the complete cable shaped to fit on the bench, then slide over the heat shrink and heat on the bench, then add the completed assembly to the model, that way you will avoid having to get the heat near the model?

The problem I struggle with heat shrink is that it is hard to shrink evenly, I end up with flat bits here and there and it helps if the heat shrink has something to shrink onto and form the shape.

Another solution maybe 0.5 mm² solid core cable or other cable with suitable OD over the insulation.

They all look very nice:thumbs:, more so the weathered blue grey one ;)

Hi Mick,

thanks for the suggestions, I'll try out a couple on the next ETH fitted Saloon - the Q13, when I get the body/roof shape sorted out.

I agree that the heatshrink does not always play ball when heated but I mainly use it when hardwiring decoders uniformity does not matter then.

Regarding the Saloons, If I were asked to pick one out, I think I'd go for the weathered one as well

Mike, you could actually just use a suitable solid copper wire and paint it black, however I think your use of heat shrink is better as it adds a rubber cover over the core and the real cable is rubber covered, it's only a subtle point but visually adds that little extra texture feel to the cable.

Solid core cable also has a insulating cover but often as not is more 'smooth' than heat shrink and visually (to me) sits half way between heat shrink and painted wire.

What did you use on the blue grey 45029? in the early build shots it is present but in the finished weathered shots it's not, I actually like the look of the ETH socket on it's own, it looks a nice casting and it has changed colour from orange to yellow, or have you done two blue grey models or is it either end.

I'm also surprised EWS went for a maroon roof.

I think that whichever version I end up doing, it will be covered with shrinktube as it seems to have the natural look of the real thing.

As far as the Blue/Grey 45029 is concerned - the first picture, that is one of DJP's MMP castings that actually 'works' in as much as the end of the 'cable' has a plug that fits into a socket in the main body fixed to the front of the coach

here you see the socketed end of the cable

DSCF1408.JPG

now 'stowed' out of use. This is the lost wax, working flap version of David's ETH set, which as I understand it is being recast at present and I think that only the pewter version is available at present.

As far as colours are concerned, I have built/painted a number of these models as (D)M45029 over the years, the one above being the first one, subsequent builds in this livery have tended to have the ETH in the more usual orange finish. I have been consistent with the colour at each end of the coach.

As far as the EWS version is concerned, it seems that they have carried over the livery to match that of their locos, I cannot recall seeing any other coaches in EWS livery, save the other Inspection Saloon DB999503 which was another ex LMS vehicle, a 1936 built 50' Kitchen Car - LMS number 30088 that BR converted in I think the late 50s, numbered TMD395279 (they also converted LMS 30106 at the same time, renumbered that one TDM395280, renumbered again to DB999504 but I'm not sure if this one survived into EWS ownership)

Hi Mike,

These 2 saloons also got EWS livery, 999509 (the MK1 type that Easbuild do) and DM45020 which is the LMS type but with sealed window frames and B4 bogies.

Cheers

Just as I was beginning to get some momentum going on the S&T conversion, I was presented with another Diag D2046 Inspection Saloon to finish off - 'preferably before Telford' was the comment, well you know me and Inspection Saloons!:))

So having trawled through various sites and my own files, I decided to do TDM45026, in Blue/Grey as running around the Birmingham Area in the early 80s, before it had the maroon repaint and the speedo fitted.

No pictures yet as it is only in primer, but this one will have the solebars and buffer beam in blue (not the buffer shanks as they were black) - I have taken delivery of the Bachmann OO model (of ADM45028) and this has a blue solebar and buffer beam, which I made comment on -should it not have been black? and was promptly shot down, it seems that the cleaning of the bodysides to keep everything looking spick & spam did not include cleaning the solebars:eek: big red face on my part, so this one will have the chassis finished with some 'medium weathering' to hide some of the blue and then I will just have a bright pink face at the end of the day :oops::oops:

Model pictures later in the week - hopefully.

The pictures of DM45026 were posted onto my Gallery thread and the model was delivered to Telford.

As well as a couple of Inspection Saloon kits and a 121 kit for a Sandite unit, I also picked up for finishing off, a pre-painted (green) Bachmann 121 from a friend. I also have one of my own to finish off, so I thought that I would do both at the same time - not done any 'batch building' before, so a first for me.

Both models will be finished as W55034 - 121034, as currently running on Chiltern Railways, but with a couple of minor internal omissions. I had already obtained the underframe castings from Westdale to cover those bits that Bachmann left off and had advised my friend to get a set for his, which were collected at Telford. He had also obtained some etches from Peter Clark for the cab interiors and also some bits from EasyBuild. I already had the air horns and speedos (from DJP/MMP) in stock.

The Bachmann model has two partitions already installed - both in the wrong places, so they will come out and be replaced and repositioned. The colours that Bachmann have chosen - a very dark green for the outside and light grey inside are both wrong, so a respray is in needed but would have had to be done anyway as the windows all need external surrounds fitting (Westdale etch) as well as a few handles/handrails that need fitting/replacing, not to mention the headlights.

I have made a start on the chassis - one completed ready for priming and the other should be in a similar state by close of play today. The steps are fabricated using CPL etches for coach end steps and the cable connector castings are from Westdale, pipes are from Gladiator/CRT.
