Back to the EMU now, and the seating is fitted and I have started to prime the bodys.
Arm rests in posh boys 1st. class and plain seats in working lads 3rd.

I did read somewere that the LSWR, when down grading some 2nd.class compartments to 3rd. class, that they even went as far as fixing false panels to reduce the width of the compartment, just to make the passengers feel more at home I suppose  :headbang:

"Bow Creek Wharf, I like the sound of that. What period will it be and well I have lots of questions but summed up........."

Mick, Rather than clog up my work bench pages with Bow Creek I have started a page on my web site blog all about the proposed layout.

Thanks Col,

I had a good read of your blog and I love the period photo's in there. Especially the permant way on that bridge section with the box at the far end. I'm sure this will make a lovely layout and I look forward to seeing progress. Will you be at the monthly meeting tomorrow ??

Mick,

Glad you find the blog interesting mate, it's a long term project, obviously, and I'll add more info, pic's and probably changes as time goes on. I plan to build a 1/2" to the ft. scale model of the layout in card and balsa, just to see if any of the ideas I have work. I'm not clever enough to do it in 3D on the computer yet :vista: :))
Definatley be at Sudbury tomorrow, so I look forward to meeting up.

The EMU's gradually moving on now interiors painted and main coat of paint on the exterior.
I have now started on the roof bus bars and vents.
I'm using the bus bars to link the power bogies at either end of the unit, with flexi- jumper cables linking between the coach body ends...JLTRT as they say  :))
Left to do is.....underframe Westinghouse brake gear, buffers, couplings, jumper cables, power bogie brakes, paint chassis's and roofs, then finally glazing.

Can't make up my mind about lining, I have an article that suggests they were lined out chrome yellow and black in the panels above the waistline, but all the photo evidence I have suggests that they were not lined...HMMMMM

Looks mega!

Are you going to chemically blacken the solebars, or paint them ?

JB.

I think it would look better without lining  8)

Wow Col, that's fast work from Sunday, I think the lining would be a lot of hard graft and when weathered you'd loose it to a certain extent. If the photo's don't have lining i'd go with that  Looks champion so far though, the end product will be a fntastic model

Both, JB, chemical blacken the edges where it's likley to get handled, so that if the paint should wear or chip you only see a blackend surface, then paint.   "Hi ya" Jo.

Mick, 28Ten, I'm sure they weren't lined, just got to persuade my customer, not that I mind doing it, but it would save some work. As for weathering I think it will be well weathered and then cleaned back, as if the bodies have had a wash.

A short break from the EMU now, I have cut the F3 parts and have started assembly.
First off, the foot plate with outer frames and buffer beams.

I've had a busy Bank Holiday weekend so i'm only just catching up but what a nice suprise to see the F3 coming on so quickly. The Miller really does work well, i'm looking forward to having a go. the F3 looks great so far Col, nice and clean   . How do you make up the cab window frames as I have to make some for my J73, also any chance of a few close up shots of the locker on the cab rear as I think these were very common amongst NE types. Keep going at this rate and you'll be test running at the next Sunday meeting  :))

Does look really nice so far mate...!!

Will you be scratching the valve gear? Am I right in thinking these had springs rather than balance weights on the valve gear after a couple of crashes involving loose balance weights flying off?

Yes you are.

Conventional weights were used to balance the reversing shafts on all GER locomotives originally. However a curious accident occurred in 1882 when one of the Bromley Singles dropped its balance weight at Streathem Fen. Somehow it bounced out between the wheels and into the path of a sister engine passing in the opposite direction, derailing it. As a result the balance weights on all locomotives were replaced by springs. These took the form of a spiral spring - like a watch spring - wound around the reversing shaft, with one end attached to the shaft and the other anchored to the frames. The design was a success, and subsequent Locomotive Superintendents (and later CMEs) maintained the system on all future GER loco designs, and they remained in place on all locomotives throughout their existence. For some reason existing Y14s (LNER J15s) couldn't be fitted with this arrangement, so instead had a long coil spring fitted with one end attached to the pin joining the reversing reach rod to the reversing crank, and the other anchored to the firebox throat plate. The design of subsequent Y14 builds was altered to fall in line with the rest of the GER fleet.

Hi Lads,
Here's a shot of the wiegh shaft on the E4 at Bressingham, you can just see the spring at the far end of the shaft, up against the frame. Its the only shot I have with the spring in view.
The E4 is basically the tender loco version of the F3, internal motion being the same components.
I am pushing to have this loco finished by the end of the month, .... deep breath inwards, close mouth.... ::) ha,ha.

If anybody needs detail photo's of the E4 I have quite a few of this loco, inside and out, underneath and on top
A lot of the parts of this loco were shared with the F3 and to a lesser extent the J15 ( same boiler/ smokebox on all three)

Mick, The window frames are etches mate, Buckjumper passed on a set some time back now, if you need any I'd check the dia. you require as these are GER and may be different to the NER.
