Following up on Dave's post, here's the layer drop down for my etch artwork in Draftsight - which is the same as AutoCad.


The fill layers are selected when filling whichever etch layer - top or bottom.

Note - the TopSide layer should be red - seems to have changed to grey in the PrintScreen/Irfanview process. - [Later] Now corrected.

Cheers chaps, PPD were very nice and sent back the revised files for me to pour over and like yours had separate layers for fill and outline, I fill my outlines on the same layer, which whilst acceptable isnt as streamlined as it could be.

Layers per se I don't have an issue with, it's the concept that you can fill on one layer when the outline is on another layer, I've been used to the program using the boundary on the layer you are filling to flood fill, any boundaries above and below will not be filled.

I'll have another play tonight and I'm sure the penny will drop LOL. Regarding see through text, simply select your text and in the command line below type TXTEXP this will explode the text to see through, you will need to clean it up as the outlines are made up of several parts so there will be some lines crossing through the see through area and these will need taking out and the whole joining back up, painful possible, the other option is to import see through text from another package.

Spoke to PPD today, parts ordered and was told will be here before I fly out next weekend, which is good. as hopefully I'll get a day or two to see how the Class 40 half etches fold up or the parts slot together, which will help with planned projects whilst away. If they come mid week may even get a couple of 08 doors added on...injurys permitting LOL.

Quick inspection and they look good and dandy, will whizz a couple of 08 doors off for test measuring and a couple of Class 40 parts to check interference fit but overall lookin good!. The cusp is quite visible on the Class 40 etch, probably due to the thicker material, nothing that can't be worked with though.

And now some cruel close ups of how it should all look assembled, well the major components.

Simons link in the US thread about using cameras as a modeling tool is very valid here, you can easily see fillets that do not have a full run of solder or where I've forgotten to remove the cusp (pony wheel deck) but to the eye it looks pretty good.

Any problems? Nope, none yet, all fitted almost perfectly once the cusp was removed, pretty darned stunned by that but there's a few more bits to add like mud guards and brackets and stuff. The only thing I will change on the next etches are the dimples for the half etch rivets, they could be 0.1mm larger in dia to give an easier deformation with the tool, but I won't re-tool this etch just for that. For a first etch I'm pretty bloody ecstatic and I have to say Nickel Silver solders like a dream, seriously doubt I'll ever produce an etch in brass after this.










I do need to check the holes in the pony wheel deck, some photos I have show ovals some show holes but none show a decent top down view of this area, all are oblique and guesswork and the drawings are no help in this area either, so that may need a new photo tool if they are too far out....not that you can see under there very easily, as I discussed with Richard Carr and Tim at the recent S7 do, but I think you can see enough so that what I've added has merit rather than just a set of side frames and end beams/buffer beam, well I think so LOL.

All the work in the drawings for half etches and tolerances have worked out perfectly which is good news for the other planned more complex and large etches.

For a first etch I'm pretty bloody ecstatic and I have to say Nickel Silver solders like a dream, seriously doubt I'll ever produce an etch in brass after this.

That looks absolutely brilliant - a fantastic result for a first etch. As you say NS is a nice material to work with, now you know why I detest etched brass. There's a couple of Dave Andrews kits I'd like and he offers his kits etched in nickel silver for a 10% premium, it's worth every penny.

I'll be watching to see how this progresses as it's giving me ideas for getting something etched for my next loco - again I'll be an etching novice so I'm keen to see how you get on. You say you'd have made the half etch dimples 0.1mm bigger in diameter - what size would you recommend? Presumably the size would be dependant on the sheet thickness?

I was aware he was dropping that option and it's not just NS kits either

Adrain, exactly, the material thickness has a bearing on the size of the rivets, I'd not factored that in, they do show up on the final item but need a bit of force and you can see where the anvil has left a small ring mark on the outside face, you can't actually see it with the eye unless you turn it in the light just so under a glass. Most of the rivets were done as 0.4mm but a few were 0.6mm, I.E. the bigger ones between the springs, think there's about four of them, for 15thou I'd go with 0.5/0.6mm for a standard rivet.

Next up will be some US loco cabs and I'll detail the layers and fills you need to do to make it as cheap as possible for PPD to work with, sadly that'll be in Autocad so the details will differ in other packages (gizmo's, roll-outs HMI etc)

Small update today as time now limited due to holiday preps, added the frame top strengthening flange and noted first error in etch, I've two left hands so that'll be a whole new photo tool, too much of a faff cutting the one end off and sticking it to the other, also found buffer beam to side frame angles a bit thick as is the top flange for the MU socket, could really be a sub part of 5 thou or just cut from 5 thou and left off, added some air control lines and temp fitted the vacuum line, need to make a couple of brackets for that. From the etch theres only a couple of fillets to add and the splashers, maybe tomorrow before I go out the door.
