Matt's workbench - current project: back to random modelling

Thank you both for the kind comments! It's now paused while I wait for delivery of suitable wire for the pickups.

In the meantime, I've started work on a Dave Bradwell brake van underframe. I actually have one from the man himself, but came across one for sale on Ebay a while ago which I bought as a source of spares.

When it arrived, the etches were bent and twisted beyond belief. I've decided to give it a go regardless - "why, when you have a perfectly good one?" I hear you ask...simple, I like a challenge!

This one will be destined for the micro layout I referenced a few posts ago...or at least that's the plan!

Just noticed this is the 100th post on this thread!

Morning all,

BG in it's rail grey primer coat - I'll have to work up to masking it in readiness for the blue!

Work on the brake van underframe is progressing well, despite my twisted etch - a testament to the quality of the kit.

Hi all,

Just a brief update - a delightful bug, no doubt passed on by my daughter, has put me out of (any) action for a week now.

I mentioned the Bradwell brake van - I started with this:

And I need to confirm this is not how the kit is delivered, this a kit I obtained from ebay!

And this is how it is now (actually it's a little further on than this now as all brakegear is complete, as are the diagonals).

Note: it is flat, I've just not filed some of the tabs down yet so the front corner appears raised.

Irritatingly I've broken one of the Rumney Models springs/axleboxes in a moment of clumsiness - lesson here is don't model when ill!

My home situation is getting untenable now, so I'm trying to grab any opportunity I can to do some modelling as a distraction.

Putting the Breakwater idea to one side, I've been working on the Class 37 again this weekend.

My plan/hope was to get it running but, sadly, things aren't going as intended. I think I'll have to strip the bogies right down and reassemble them.

In the meantime, I've started detailing one of the cosmetic bogie sides. The etched PH Design steps have been assembled, with the position of the bottom step adjusted.

I also fashioned some new brake cylinders as the Bachmann ones are very undernourished...only another 9 to go!

Morning all,

I've dragged this back onto the bench after a break of 6 months. I wanted it in BR Blue as a Parcels Van, but wanted to keep the weathering subtle rather than condemned.

Weathering and fading blue can be tricky to avoid it being too flat and featureless. I'm pleased with the finish, feel free to tell me otherwise!

Incidentally, this is the first model I've painted for 12 months - I enjoyed getting back to it!

Very nice work on the CCT, did you fade after you painted or use a faded paint colour? I'm getting near to weathering an 08 and may try and fade that.

Prompted by a comment on Facebook, I've dragged this one back onto the bench too. This one falls firmly into the "entirely random and self-indulgent" category!

BR Ferry Open wagon under construction.

I need to progress my version of the same thing, Matt (a shameless copy of your efforts), but I'm currently in soldering mode and enjoying it. Glad I got the buffers before Lanarkshire Models closed now.

I managed one final order before the end too - these buffers were sold out though so this will have to be a one-off.

I'll look forward to seeing your version in due course!

Seeing as we were talking about the Ferry Open wagon, here's where we currently are:

It's been an ordeal to get to here for some reason and still plenty to do - safety loops, lamp brackets, tie down loops and other bits and bobs. I have to say that everything below the solebar is guesswork so please don't look too closely!

Some photos appear to show an air tank as well, so I'll have to have a go at scratchbuilding that somehow.
