Matt's workbench - current project: back to random modelling

Seeing as we were talking about the Ferry Open wagon, here's where we currently are:

It's been an ordeal to get to here for some reason and still plenty to do - safety loops, lamp brackets, tie down loops and other bits and bobs. I have to say that everything below the solebar is guesswork so please don't look too closely!

Some photos appear to show an air tank as well, so I'll have to have a go at scratchbuilding that somehow.

Why guess, we published a drawing back in 1983

I do actually have the book referenced by Paul above, and it's highlighted that my model is too short - and the fitting of the various underframe parts only highlights this in comparison to plans. I can live with it as a one-off though.

I reckon it looks good when compared to Paul's photos. How short is it? After all, this hobby is full of compromises.

Good afternoon, first post for a while from me.

I won't bore anyone with the details, but I've had to move out of my house and into my mother's small flat. I had a dedicated modelling room before but this is a very small flat which has meant that I've had to return to being an old skool modeller at the kitchen table. I also only have the tools and materials I was able to fit in my car too so change all around.

Until I can get myself sorted, a lot of the projects I was building or working on have had to be boxed up and stored. While browsing online, I came across a photo of the crossing box at Grain and it caught my eye. Here was a structure small enough that I actually could build it at the kitchen table.

Given the aforementioned limited availability of materials and tools, I decided this would have to be an approximation rather than a faithful representation, but it's similar-ish that hopefully it captures the look of the prototype.

The biggest challenge was always going to be the windows, so I built the carcass from some 1mm clear plastic, clad in Slaters embossed planked sheet [the real box has raised beading]. Everything else is scratchbuilt from bits and pieces.

I couldn't find any photos of the rear of the box, so have had to make an educated guess. It's obviously not finished yet, but it's not too far away either.

Hi all,

I mentioned the post office back in July. It's taken a back seat recently while I adjusted to my new surroundings, but i started work on it again.

It's inspired by the (now former) Post Office in Arisaig, but with a few tweaks as the prototype is not detached.

Still a fair bit of work to do, not least with the roof (that may be repainted once I finish applying the slates).

Hi Matt.

I must say that I enjoyed reading your contribution to James Hilton's Ribbons magazine.

Well done !

Rob
Thank you very much for noticing!

It was very kind of James to ask me to contribute. I've not had my copy yet but the comments I've seen online are positive, which is really great.
