This loco is complete now - all weathering done, and it works well and smoothly. The first wagon is complete, and the second is half done, but I had a mis-print having paused the print last night to top up the resin and restarted it, but it seems it was in the middle of making the supports rather than the chassis itself, and the supports didn't like it......

Ive made two wagons - these are all i need - printed on my Mars 2 Pro, wheels from Peter Binnie. They're fitted with choppers at one end (with a steel loop for auto uncoupling), and are of course functioning tippers. I will also have to make a small 'Tender' wagon to house an auxiliary battery, as according to my maths, the loco battery will only last 5 hours, due to the large power drain of the mister unit (250mA). This can plug into the loco under the back end. I need to find a suitable driver as well....

These are 1/8" brass brads from Hobby.UK.com and very nice they are - although they do add to the labour!
Sorry for the late comment, but for future reference a great source of rivets that are perfectly in scale for 16mm is Prime Miniatures High Quality Miniature Nuts, Screws, Bolts, Hardware, Fasteners and Accessories | Prime-Miniatures
I used their rivets to detail my Slaters quarry Hunslet and they were perfect. Also for adding all the missing ones that Slaters forgot or didn't bother with.
PM also do some astonishingly small nuts & bolts (M0.6) which may be easier than trying to make small hex heads.

Next up was the smokebox with a built-in reservoir for a cheap (£2) Ebay mister unit, as used in the Quarry Hunslet. This also incorporated the chimney. The advantage of having the mister tank built in is that it positions the mister precisely, and ensures no leaks. The down side is that the actual mister has to be installed from underneath, and the underside then capped and sealed.
Again printed at 10 microns taking about 20 hours, but the result was very clean, with almost no attention to visible surfaces. There were recesses for a couple of small magnets to retain the smokebox door, and two holes for filling and venting the tank.

Looking at the last photograph I can see the advantage of using this technology. I can see the much smaller version in the background. As I struggle with putting together the brass frame for my G3 V2parcel van I would imagine for someone with your skills it would be a breeze and all the rivets and bolts would be perfect.

Thank you folks - I just thought it would be mildly entertaining. There is a 1.7g servo in the torso, with the wire going right through the leg (very carefully drilled through!). After it was working, the servo was buried with milliput to reform the back of his jacket.
Transmission is using the centre of a nylon servo horn, with brass square tube heat-sunk into it, and further secured by epoxy, and the amputated head has a new neck of milliput, with a centre core of a smaller square brass tube to slide in the servos tube....

Excellent work Giles. :thumbs:

I have a Dapol 08 and have often wondered if it would be possible to install a driver with a moveable head, which could then turn, to suit the loco’s direction of travel? You’ve now proved that it’s doable and I predict seeing a plethora of drivers with moving heads on everyone’s layouts, from this point onwards!

(I don’t know if Modelu have an owl in their range, but if they do, I expect we’ll be seeing one of those on your workbench soon…;)).

The problem is that I have the servo in the back, and of course the drive also has to centre with the neck - so 7mm is rather small for this ( the 1.7g servo is the smallest you can buy). There are 4mm dia micro gearmotors, but their output is 160rpm at 3v, so one would need further severe reduction to make it sufficiently useful. Alternatively, a servo below or alongside.......
