Flaxfield- A bucolic 1950s Suffolk backwater

Hi Phil,

I have some( rather nice chrome jobs actually ), but frankly, I really didn't like the look when I offered them up. I felt they were rather intrusive. I used them way back on Sheep Lane and since then I've looked for more covert ways of inter board connection.

Like that idea though I have already drilled the holes for 6mm bolts and wing nuts. The other thought I had was to use a sprung pin such as this ( example only )

But there's no rush at present.

Rob

Rob,

Can I ask if you noticed them, when you saw Dewerstone at Taunton or Ruan at Bristol?

Hi Phil,

I didn't have a look at Ruan. You were upstairs and I must admit I looked in, got as far as the EM Gauge society and meant to go back but never did.
I saw Dewerstone and we chatted but no, I didn't notice the clasps, which undermines my assertion that they're intrusive. However, to me, they are. I want all the inter-board connections out of sight, which they currently are.

Rob.

Rob,

They are out of sight as the drape that covers the legs and the detritus that we hide behind the layout is fixed high enough to cover the clips as well.

Might see you later.

Good morning Rob,

Following on here and 'the other place '.

If you wanted to continue with the SECR theme, you could go with an extension to the Sheppey Light beyond Leysdown i.e. Shellness.
Pretty flat and barren there, not much in the way of habitation.

Perhaps a 'what if' WW1 seaplane base?

Cheers, Nigel.

Morning Phil,

I'm going to Wells tomorrow. I had thought to go today but I'm pre-booked for a number of domestic matters ahead of going on hols next week.

I think that the drape thing is the issue as I'm not intending to display Blackwater ( if it gets out ) at the usual height I display the others at. ( and when I do the drapes sit below the side of the layout anyway ) I'm thinking Blackwater will be placed on a table with any drapes over the table itself but not attached to the layout.

That's why I want a 'clean' side to the layout. It's just my preference.

Rob.

Hi Phil,

Yes, Wells was good but I seemed to spend most of the time chatting !
I did pick up some AG wheels but it does look like I'll be using British Finescale points which the Rapido wagons will pass through.
I'll order these at the end of August. Once built, I'll start on the layout itself.

Nice gloopiness in the estuary Rob (R)
Cheers Julian

Those are awfully black clouds Rob in the background, is that the storm they're talking about tonight!!
Very atmospheric.
Cheers Julian
Not so improbable, here is a pic of my (then) lovely Tiger Moth since sold and crashed together with the T6G that I spent many a happy hour in sharing the joy of flight. Happy Days!

Hello Rob
It was good to see you at Wells. I hope your holiday is suitably restful.

Cheers

Hi Jan,

Likewise, albeit briefly!

I was a bit pre-occupied with some pre-hol issues but I enjoyed the few hours I had there then be able to go home and have time to resolve a particular vehicle drama which was proving tricky.

As ever, an exceptional selection of layouts and many friends to stop and chat to.

Morning all,

I'm now settling back to reality after our time away but as of yet, aside from some tidying of the books in the Room of Doom, there's been no resumption of any modelling..........yet. The plan is to finish the board ( s ) and finalise the control system as I want to do any cutting or altering ahead of any track laying.

Whilst away, some scenic items were delivered from MBR, some of which will be used on Blackwater Pier in the form of some low shrubbery. There's no need for any trees or large bushes but I'd like a bit of contrast to what will essentially be a lot of static grass.

These should fit the bill and can be trimmed to length etc.

The rest of the delivery is destined for Flaxfield of which, more in due course.

Afternoon,

Well, it's been something of a while since I've posted hereon. It's going to be another month or so before any progress is made with Blackwater Pier. I'm really just waiting for Taunton RailEx to come and go before embarking on anything else.

The SE&CR alter ego for Blackwater took a huge step forward with the arrival at the end of September of some 3D printed SE&CR round ended opens from the same source as the single bolsters. They are just right and that pretty much takes care of the wagon side of things.

The GER side of things will need a bit more time but the acquisition of a somewhat overpriced but desirable D&S 20 Ton brake to accompany the D&S 10 Ton van takes care of the brake van requirements. A few vans and opens and the wagons will be sorted out. Locos are due to arrive before Christmas.

The early L&NER side of things is also shaping up. The Hornby J15 will be joined by an Accurascale J68..Coaches are in stock in the form of ex W&U tram cars and a Hattons full brake to provide a nod to the Kelvedon and Tollesbury light railway. Wagons are in stock along with a Toad B so that's that all done.

So, fingers crossed it will be a more productive winter than the last.

Afternoon all,

With this year's exhibitions all but done, aside from a guest slot operating at the NEC in a couple of weeks or so, thoughts are turning back to doing something on Blackwater Pier or making a start on Flaxfield.
I've had a lazy day today and have been playing with colourizing B&W images to provoke a bit of interest.
I'm particularly pleased with this one of Tollesbury Pier which has given me a real insight into how I want the scenery on Blackwater to be coloured. I alway like a bit of a caricature appearance and I think this fits the bill.

Very autumnal,the pier photo....

Plus, who on earth remembers what the real thing looked like back then, colour-wise?

The water state adds to the autumnal air as well...flat calm, not a wipple in sight......
The far grounded coach body does give the impression it was made by laser cut MDF....Prior to painting?
