Not been able to do much lately, but I have been accepted for my first exhibition at the very end of April 2019. Appropriately enough it's the Hornby Railway Collector's Association 50th anniversary show at Stoneleigh, great to have a proper deadline now.

If a miracle happens and this stupid idea is shortlisted for Railex then I'll be ready!

Power to your elbow, we've all won this one - and then the winner will be announced...! Over in the 'other place' there are different entries (also some duplicates of what is here) so there are lots of models that wouldn't otherwise have seen the light of day...

Wise words Mick, completely agree. If this compo results in more layouts at exhibition then we are all winners.

I've not got a login at the 'other place', doesn't seem that friendly there.

Have to admit Tony, I'm just a lurker there.....mostly just accessing through the 2mmSA website links on the home page. There's a super video diary by Nick Mitchell on chassis construction and, it too, now has a link from the 2mil home page.

Thanks Mick, I'll take a look. I doubt it will tempt me to rejoin the 2mm Association, sadly. I've now got so many 7mm wagons, including my first JLTRT/MM1 kit plus a Dapol 08, I can't imagine going that small again. I'm forgetting the four Wrenn 08s for this project too.

I do really respect and admire what the association has achieved over the years, there's a lot of scale associations out there that do not seem to achieve anywhere near the amount the 2mm has achieved. The shere amount and breadth of products they produce puts even the major manufacturers to shame sometimes.

Whatever we do as individuals it's all part of the rich tapestry of railway modelling life, but most of all we should be enjoying it.

Thanks to @Steve's Shed's idea of a modelmaking weekend, the project recieved a kickstart last weekend. The two remaining 08 chassis' have been refurbished and after much gear meshing bedding in, seem to be running smoothly on their new 60:1 gears. Three bodyshells also had the first topcoat on, so it won't be long before Neasden's late 50's allocation of four 08 shunters is finished.

A Dapol insulfish (old HD) was also 'Dublo'd' by having HD couplings fitted to it's chassis. The old HD coupling mounting boss that thankfully is still present in the tooling makes the process dead easy.

Ok, so matters are at least progressing now, I've soldered the dropper wires to all three track panels, next job is to mark up and bradawl the dropper wire holes through the blue foam baseboard, wire up the bus bars, make some plastikard plates to stop ballast falling down the huge Peco point motor holes, then glue the whole lot together and in to the Cameo cabinet.

I've also finished reading George Dow's three volume trilogy on the Great Central, it was being read to give me a flavour of the GCR during this build. I've learnt loads on railways and their influence up to 1922. I'd recommend everyone reads the line history of the project they might be working on, if you haven't already that is.

Congratulations to the shortlisted builders and their Cameo layouts, it will add lots of great layouts to the exhibition curcuit I'm sure and encourage others to build. I like the idea of it continuing, if for no other reason that it will encourage even more layouts.

I think the competition should be a triennial affair, and I would be willing to help with the admin of it.

So, back to my slice of vintage waywardness.



Here's a baseboard, with tracklaying commenced. Test piece behind, showing some ballasting trials. Three painted bodyshells, awaiting transfers.

Next up. Underside of baseboard, showing dropper wires and point motors. The point motors are removeable in case of failure, but I understand Peco point motors are tested as much as an IKEA drawer is, so that may be "pointless". (No pun was intended)

On the first page of my blog, I was discussing milk train formations, my good friend @Steve's Shed got me a copy of the Great Central in LNER days, volume 2, and voila! All the information you could ever need on the Dorrington Milk. I've just got volume 1, which has a chapter on Marylebone suburban services, not relevant to this project but will be for the next project.

Moral of the story, despite Google's claim, they do not yet have all the information on everything. Books still rock!

I had originally thought a plastikard tray would be needed for the point motors to sit in. I then thought I could get away with just a plate glued to the underside of the point, but no such luck. Firstly, the plastikard of course warps due to only being glued in the middle, but more importantly the plastikard needs to be glued to the blue foam.

So I've reverted to my box idea, this can then be securely glued to the blue foam using Gripfill and doesn't warp.

All four have been constructed and glued to the turnouts.

The tracks at the ends of the baseboard need proper fixings. I'm thinking conventional PCB soldered to the track and then to what, blue foam?

No of course not, so a piece of wood has been let into the foam to be wood glued to the ply Cameo cabinet and gripfill'd to the blue foam.
