Hi Martyn
Just read through Church Norton great work I rather like your base board construction it is unique, a well thought out design. Which car did you end up driving home? The older sporty red one or its newer rival.
David.

If I had the choice, it would always be the F40, such a classic shape…

Fantastic Progress Martyn,

Can I ask what size the layout is overall?

Regards
Josh

Hi Josh,

The room was a double garage in its previous life, and is roughly 5 metres x 6 metres.

Cheers,

Martyn.

Good afternoon Guys,

Loco building has taken up most of my time lately, so not a lot of work has been happening on the layout. There is one major upheaval taking place and that is the repositioning of the platforms. Although the minimum radius on the layout is 6’, the curvature of the platforms were too tight and with coaches along side the platforms the gaps were much too wide, the passengers would have to of taken a running jump to get on or off the coaches ! So we now have staggered platforms on a much straighter section of the layout. I have had to take up the headshunt that feeds the private sidings and there is now a platform on the original track bed, and the headshunt has now been replaced along side the new platform, hopefully the before and after photos will show what I am trying to explain.

Still a lot of scenic work to carry out, before I’m happy…

The original was superb but I do like the staggered platform option, I remember talking to you about that option a long time ago and it was a common theme along the welsh marches route.
Hi Steve,.

Yes it was our discussion that finally made me decide to make the changes..

A lot more greenery and ballast still needs to be added, but it’s a start.

Good afternoon guys,

It’s been over a year since I last posted, so I thought I would put up a brief update. Well not a lot has been happening mainly due to work commitments and lack of mojo… :(

The layout is now performing well after a few problems, mainly electrical faults due to my lack of knowledge in that area. So hopefully this coming winter I will prioritise with the scenic side of the layout and some more loco building. Below are a couple of photos of work in progress, the white area by the goods shed is filler where I’m building up the area to sleeper level, not a diorama for a snow scene.

Hopefully more updates soon, now the mojo’s back…

Hi Mark,

It’s one from Intentio, great fun to build and a nice solid structure once built. Someway back on this thread I put up some photos of the build.

Looking good Martyn -

a lot of it is nearly there - get a push on over the winter! It will be great to see further progress.

Cheers

Hi Tony,

Thank you for the encouraging words, yes now the mojo’s returned hopefully I will be able to show some more progress in the coming months.

You’re a lucky chap, although you live in the middle of nowhere you have a few talented modellers not far away . Especially with Geoff working his magic, can I hire him for my scenic work..

All the best,

Martyn.

A quick update. Now that I have finally decided where the goods shed will be sighted, I noticed that I need to install a catch point. The bay platform in the adjacent siding relys on the shunting spur to protect the running line, but the turnout which feeds the two sidings is only a single slip, so in reality there would be nothing to stop any runaways from reaching the running line. So the P/way have been busy this weekend.

Hi Martyn,

You might want to add a sand/gravel trap to protect the box!

it wouldn’t be the first to be demolished by an errant loco…
Yes, I think someone should write a book on the subject, not just signalboxes as I seem to recall the remote interlocking at the east end of Ruscombe loops getting wiped out by an errant freight train

I would imagine in this situation a normal point leading to a short engine length siding in front of the box with a buffer stop would be installed rather than a catch point.

I would disagree - such an arrangement would only be helpful in a situation where there was more than one siding in rear of the trap necessitating the use of the engine to shunt between the sidings. Since in Martyn's case there is only the goods shed road, I think Martyn's trap is the correct solution. I would not bother with a sand drag for the same reason - since there is no shunting to do, there is little chance of an engine running through the trap. I suspect in such a situation in real-life, all the engine would do is position a rake, then disappear - any shuffling of the waggons through the shed would be done with a pinch-bar.

Keep up the good work Martyn! Looking forward to developments!

Hi Simon, as Howard has said the only threat to the box would maybe a wagon, as the local shunter would just drop the wagons there and return later after a cuppa and a fag .

In the photo below there is a short shunting spur with a buffer stop, so should there be a runaway from the bay platform it is catered for. The goods shed siding needed a catch point because there is only a single slip and there is nothing stopping a runaway reaching the running line. Hopefully the photo explains this better.

Thank you Howard, yes now the mojo has returned I will hopefully update a bit more often. The colouring of the ground in front of the goods shed is horrendous at present as I am trying out different textures, from kiln sand, chinchilla dust and anything else that might resemble the look I’m after..

All the best,

Martyn.

Martyn,

I tried soil from the garden, I sifted it, and then put it in an old foil takeaway tray in the oven to cook, after the roast was taken out.

might be worth a go?

Morning Simon, that’s a good shout. I have used soil before with good results, I mean you can’t get closer colour wise. Actually thinking about it I have a tray hidden under the layout with the rest of the clutter, doh !!
