4mm An EM Workbench - Any Old Oil

Nice looking model, but the leaf springs are a disappointment- the prototype piccies on Rapido’s web site show 7 leaves, not 4… :(

Regards

Dan

Fair comment - mine will get a waft of Milliput: the bulk of the springs will look better, even at the expense of leaf detail. They're still not nearly the worst springs out there (Dapol 14 ton tanks, the ones in 4mm are horrid)...

BR Ferry Open, diagram 1/055

Both Ferry opens on their wheels now. This side shows up the removal process for the printing supports and the rough, tent-like structure, that will support the sheets. I've made the couplings extra long to allow for the buffer length and my suspicions about the sheet support were accurate: the unsheeted one will have the Rumney Models alternative. Brake gear next and yes, those wheels are actually too small.

Brake pipes tonight, part of a shelf clearing exercise. So we have the twin Ferry Opens (which have had some brakeshoes from ABS/Modelstock since last seen), with vac’ and air pipes, a Clayhood (a bargain at the Tonbridge show), and a Dapol bogie bolster E which has been waiting for me to get around to this one thing for ages… hence the dust.

All this lot need lamp irons, too. But not tonight!

Ratio Clayhood

A quickie. For a fiver at the Tonbridge show the other week, a Ratio Clayhood. As a simple Morton braked four wheel open this won’t take long, especially as this one will be loaded.

At this point, everything from the yellow box that I will use has gone together, and now it’s time to detail the chassis before painting, sheeting and the obligatory coating of clay dust.

A break from Humbrol and wasp stripes and a birthday present. This, from Taff Vale Models is another example of the 3D print boom in the form of an early railtank. Quite nice, if suffering from the usual challenges: I broke one lever guide fitting the bearings (the holes needed opening out a smidge), so will replace those in more durable brass. There doesn't seem to be provision for safety loops, so I have added these and will make a couple of minor changes - adding transoms to support the middle of the tank rather than the cradle supplied, perhaps making a new transverse discharge pipe underneath. It will be finished as one of the ancient vehicles that staggered on in the Shell BP fleet into the early '60s.

Yes, I did remember to add some lead before I glued the tank ends one. Yes, I also remembered to drill a couple of breather holes underneath...

One clayhood. Needs a bit more load, the horse hook holes for BR type axleguards, and a sheet before painting.

The door springs are from a Rumney Models etch, along with the axle boxes, springs, and levers.

Quite tidy,

Over the last few nights (down time between the last train at 1 o'clock until services restart just before 5 o'clock) I've been right through this thread from start to finish - I've always enjoyed your modelling @AJC and it's been an absolute joy going through 90 pages of your work :)

What happened to the Standard 4, it locked very promising indeed!

Thanks James - the Franken 4 is still in its box waiting for me to summon up the enthusiasm to tackle the bits of the motion that have to be fitted to the chassis so that I can paint that prior to wheeling up. Once I've done that, it should be a relatively simple job, but it's a little way down the queue for various reasons. I need to sort out a few things in said queue to give me a clear run at it. Nearly everything in said queue is simpler than a big 4-6-0 with Walscherts valve gear, however!

very nice. Just need another dozen or so and a china clay layout to go with it!

Ha! No. This will go with dad's short rake from the '70s (there's another two, I think - Kenline brakes, what I think must be EMGS axleboxes, etc. - there was a plasticard 22 to go with these once upon a time), and another Ratio. It can trundle around behind one of the smaller diesels in the fleet, perhaps.

EDIT - after all these years, we should probably add some tie bars...
