Hi Rob, I did a review
Hattons DJM 14xx Review H1410
And follow up on my blog
14xx Frustration..

long story short, reasonable runner on the flat, when introduced to hills and loads cogging occurs. Same thing with DJM J94 so looked for improvement. Removed part of drive gearing, and have replaced the coupling rods, for marginal improvement in performance in both dc/dcc but gains in appearance. Design of chassis is DJM split chassis system of which I’m not a fan, over complicated and poorly engineered. Played a bit with additional weight, which I may return to. Loco subsequently sat on shelf of doom for a year and a bit.
Have accepted the running as it’s as good as it will be, and now doing the cosmetics, today fitted the ashpan which is omitted on the model. Have already prepped the cab area for detailing improvement, and am scratching head re brake gear replacement, which is a work of fiction aft of the rear drivers. Once done it’ll be an auto trailer engine primarily.

Thanks Paul.

It's such a shame that these aren't right. I was aware of the ashpan ommission but not the brakd gear. This aside, they really look the part but it seems most of DJM output is flawed in some way or another.

My main concern, obviously, is how they run. If mine exhibit any running issues, back they go. I am not that worried and have already raised my concern with Hattons and there are no problems should I wish to return them.

I would not hold my breath about a repeat run of them.........I could be wrong......

Some of Albion Yards locos and stock get a run out on Shelfie2. The penultimate picture of the 08 and Mk1’s are part of the testing I’m doing with Dinghams in 4mm, overall I’m pleased with their reliability, but curve radii with longer stock, 57’ and above means that the electromagnet positioning is quite challenging to get a one location fits all function.

Hi Bob
The foliage is a mix of different types of scatter materials from Woodland Scenics, Green Scenes, and Treemendus. The structural core for these are Woodland Scenics armatures with polyfibre and the various scatter materials applied over those.

Well this past weekend the layout had its first day out at ‘Define’. Overall it behaved very well with a (guesstimate) mid to high 90% reliability of the Dinghams, also my first time with hands free operation uncoupling. A friend dropped this Oxford Janus off to run, which worked ok apart from being reverse wired at the factory. It looked the part and I’m now considering if I should add one to the roster.

Powerful, brutish industrial diesels, almost the opposite of cute, little industrial steam locos, but just as interesting in their own way. I've got one of those Januses and it runs pretty well, straight out of the box as well.

Paul will you stop showing pictures of the prototype in your modelling thread.

Thanks George :)229FE1AA-503F-42F1-B2D8-62CC43D063A8.jpeg The postie today delivered one of the Model Rail/Rapido J70 locomotives. A quick look over indicates they’ve certainly caught the character of the engine. Running in on rollers at the moment it’s quiet, steady, and controllable down to a crawl. It’s another Shelfie series project for the future, street running, j70’s, Sentinels, what’s not to like?
