Really nice ''wet rust'' finish.

How did you achieve that, please?

Thank you!

Admittedly that photo was taken before it was fully dry which is why it looks quite wet, although the effects don't dry completely matt.

I start with a base coat of black primer, and then mist on a 'rubber black', which is a very dark greyish brown colour, followed by a mist of a dark black brown mix, both from the airbrush. If you don't have an airbrush then a few mists from rattle cans would also do the job.

Then using the products in the below photos, beginning on the left I apply a very thin wash of 'Light Rust Deposits' which just gathers around details. Then again moving left to right, I splatter on the other 3 colours - just dipping the brush in and then using a cocktail stick to rub the brush against so the bristles flick towards the surface.

How thick each paint is, how much is on the brush, and even whether you shake the bottle before beginning or not dramatically affects the final result so it's quite 'tuneable' to your liking. Likewise, adding a gloss or matt varnish over the top, or leaving it raw, also changes the final effect.

Added a few Modelu figures from their Patreon downloads which adds a nice bit of life to the scene. I'll probably leave it at just these 5 chaps.

I also had a little play around as best I can sans fiddle yards. It became clear quite quickly that anything larger than an 0-4-0 with the exception of maybe something like an 03/04 really struggles with the tight pointwork and inset track. I think therefore that when operating, larger locos will be limited to bringing in trains into the centre straight road (as a sort of reception siding), and then smaller shunters will take it from there. Probably quite prototypical for a lot of places though tbf.

Those photos would be very believable if the concrete was weathered down, it's far too pristine.

Absolutely fantastic modelling.

Thanks very much for the kind comments all! And yes, I still think the concrete is too clean too :D I'll look into adding some more stains and general muck.

Some egregious wagonery has been taking place on the bench recently. I picked up this pair of old Coopercraft kits for the ridiculous sum of £1 each at the Thirsk show a couple of weeks back. They build up very nicely and have been finished in early BR livery.

A Bachmann 13t Open, and a pair of Oxford 7 plankers which were acquired second hand from the DPS open day at Barrow Hill are now weathered up and ready for service too.

An ancient pair of vans also had a respray, the SR one on the left being from Dapol, the other a Mainline model. Both look fine with a decent paint and weathering job, if a little crude in detail.

Playing around with the 0-6-0 Sentinel, looking perfectly at home on the layout and negotiating the tight trackwork with ease.

Didn't realise until your post above that someone had done a 3D print of a Yardmaster - found and ordered!

to save any others the searching.

Mine is actually my own CAD and print, but I spotted the Narrow Minded one when looking for references and it looks excellent!

I've only just come across your thread, what a fantastic layout! The inset track looks superb, did you literally cover everything completly with tile grout then scrape it out until it all worked and smooth the other areas over?

Thanks Steve, exactly that! It was quite some work but looked quite good in the end. There are probably better ways to do it :D

Spent a few days this week getting Forge Island ready for its next trip out at Doncaster in Feb. I bought a few new bits of rolling stock from the Pontefract exhibition last weekend which are now weathered and 3-linked. This has allowed me to consolidate my existing stock a tad, and retire some of the older models. I also grabbed one of the recent Oxford shunting tractors which should look rather nice parked in the yard (seen here being delivered!)
