Wildlife in the garden - at any time of year

I would quite like to entice hedgehogs to my garden again - especially now I grow so much veg that thw local snail population is a bit too keen on!

Apropos of not much, hedgehogs are described by the NZ Dept of Conservation as "Our most underrated predator". There's no shortage of them around.
They are one of many introduced animals that play havoc with the endemic flora and fauna. So they are not so popular locally.

There are some "Hedgehog" web sites that say what they need in a garden...I have followed those recommendations as I can and there are hogs here most nights. Not every night though, last year there were none... and none until May this year.

I have a deep, rectangular pond in my front garden. Deep, as in roughly 18" or so deep. Made of some sort of 'pot' material....[Not plastic!]
To avoid finding drowned hedgehogs floating about of a morning, I liberated a large, redundant concrete fence post form next door...and sunk one end into the pond, resting the other end nicely on the edge.
Makes a nice ramp for them...I have no idea if it's used for its intended purpose!
But, bodz use it as a public baths and shower....Local cats pass by & go for a drink...
I have 3 Not-mi-cats living with me [plus another from next door]...one of whom has been in the pond a few times [he's a bit 'needy' really]..
Probably when it has masses of those tiny leaved weeds on the surface? Thinks it's grass, and gets a fright.
To make matters worse, he charges round to the back door and its cat flap, and screams indoors, to rush round the living room at around chair back height, sopping wet!
For 30 minutes there's no consoling him.
With hens on one side, and prize cockerels in the plot behind, there's no shortage of hunting possibilities.
Rodents do have a hard time here....I have at least two buzzard nests behind my garden, high up in the trees.
Maybe more further down the village street?
Had a spate of visits from Hummingbird Hawk-moths a week or so ago too.
Loads of self-seeded mauve flowers, which spread from the garden over the road...They like those.

Seems everyone is seeing these Hummingbird Hawk Moths this year. Never seen one in Oxford before let alone in my garden. Thankfully it hung about long enough for me to get my camera.
