@steve50 I'm very pleased you found my article helpful :)

You don't need much paint to tint the varnish; just a drop in half a bottle top of thinned varnish is sufficient.

It works on BR blue too, experiment with the varnish and paint mix though. A very tiny bit of Matt Leather helps too. If you're painting the loco I'd consider mixing the BR blue with Rail Grey to create a faded base coat then follow the method as per the article.

This sound rather interesting. Could you let us know which MRJ your article is in? Thank you.

Something I've been working on over the last year as and when I've felt up to it is the signal box controlling the junction with the exchange sidings.

wp-17724878906866174460052814902912.jpg

It has a shell of 60 thou Plastikard with framing from 20 thou and individually applied planks from 100 x 10 thou Evergreen strip.

Steps from York Model Making..

wp-17724878881612787663093465995624.jpg

I initially made the roof from Plastikard but made a replacement from 10 thou brass.

I'm struggling with the windows.

wp-17724878859047905455671617818411-1.jpg

I initially made windows using 10 thou square strip on 1mm Perspex using Plastic Weld. The method works well but I'm struggling with getting consistency between the different windows. My tremor's making placing the individual strips/pieces a bit of a challenge.

When I did my signal box for Cheddar I got
York modelmaking to cut the windows from 0.5mm Rowmark and stuck them to 0.5mm Perspex with spray mount before trimming to size.

I’ll be following your signal box build with interest James - doing a GC box from scratch has been on my agenda for years, although I’m now struggling with not being lazy and using a Bachmann Rothley box instead!

For the windows, Phoenix do a sheet of etched GC frames - might be worth a look? https://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/products/4-20212

Thank you for the link. Unfortunately these are for a Type 4 GCR cabin, like the type you would see on the London Extension whereas the NLLR cabins were all variations of the Type 5

They look great!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they cost?

Can’t honestly remember but it wasn’t expensive. You can give them a call and see.
Quite happy to make them available.

Would the Ratio GWR signal box windows fit? I've used them for all sorts of non GWR applications, though I have to admit that in some cases I've fudged the window opening measurements to suit. No-one has picked me up on this, yet.
