So sadly I can't start just yet on the painting as the chassis needs some more work done

Firstly sorting the pickups

Only 3 axles at the moment have pickups and as one of those isn't that reliable something needs to be done

Firstly putting pickups on the tender wheels trying very hard to keep them out of the way of the propshaft

After days of working with a clean loco body the chassis is rather filthy

I have read about the use of 9ct gold for the tips of pickups. This can be had as the loops for ear rings, usually a pound or two for a pair in charity shops. It doesn't tarnish and it will take solder well.

If you see post 8 of this thread you will see me using that arrangement on a diesel shunter.... Great minds and all that....

I usually make an armature from phosphor bronze wire then add a ring of gold to the end.... That means if for any reason it does wear it can be removed a new one added without disturbing the main pickup armature

Sometimes I have good ideas

And just in case anyone had noticed, yes the RH axel journal has a section removed from it where as the LH one does not.... This is to clear the prop shaft that runs underneath and yes it is that close!

So been a little while but today is a monumental day.

Firstly all the pickups are now done but I won't bore you with any more on that subject

The final bits for the chassis are this spring carrier axlebox.

And there we are on the front axle.... Luckily I restrung one of my guitars recently so had some string offcuts for springs.

Tender brake shoes

And in place. Just to note this design of tender had clasp brake shoes on one side of the tender only and no brakes on the loco. The downhill approach into the terminal station at wells must have been scary on a wet autumnal day!

And a final little flourish the loco sandboxes ... Or rather the lower half .... for when you have to throw your loco into reverse on the down hill into wells on a wet day and the tender brakes aren't cutting it and the wall of the station is getting ever closer.

And that is all the building done on the chassis so next job is painting painting and painting.

So as the construction of the locomotive is now finished I thought you all might appreciate some final photographs of it all together before I splash paint all over it!

To be honest it might be nice to leave it like this but it needs painting and weathering. The etched number plates are on order, the paints are ready so when I get back from holiday the process will start.... watch this space

George, you should be really proud of what you have achieved here. To think it is your first scratchbuilt loco too - truly amazing!

George, did you have this at Workshop wise at Stannington last year? I'm sure I saw the templates on the bench.
Yes Dave I did have them on demo stand and the chassis and basic body shell running up and down. I think I was making the tender frames at the time if I recall.....

I might be wrong but we're you the gentleman from Kirk yethom who had an interest in the GNR? Or have I mistaken you for someone else?

Yep, that's me. I should be at WW this year too, probably only from lunchtime onwards due to work. Currently working on some etches which are also my avatar pic.

It would be good to see you if you do make it to WW. I should be there with a portion of Mucklemouth trying to demo how I design cameo layouts or rather fail to design....

A GNR H1 class ..... interesting......
