I suppose, this approach would work with ballasting too? Though I guess I've found an excuse to put off my own ballasting for another week . . .

Yes, with care to avoid ballast getting into the crown of the clump.
Primo clumps (recommended) are packed as all of a single size - although there are a couple of lengths/heights in the range so little scope to relrepresent spreading vegetation.
Games Workshop clumps (also recommended) has several heights and widths in one pack plus a few longer lengths of thin width which is a good starting point for grass in cracks.
Both products benefit from trimming around the sides to remove stragglers (fibres which tend to lie flat).

Hmm, nearly a year later and Scruffs has been out twice and next weekend is at the Fareham show. For those that don't venture to the other place here are photos of the layout and what progress has happened since the layout appeared at its first show in March.
Colliery Screens - Cladding of the building is now complete though below the roof was not complete, up next is drawing and printing windows. Other detailing parts are to be added, and then a lot of paint.
Footpath, fencing and signs.
The foot crossing has had the fences added and some new figures have appeared which were painted by a younger member of the local railway club.
Signs were added from Monks gate models. Still need to added gates and finish painting the fencing.
Trees
The first trees were "planeted" today, they are Primo silver birches with a single Oak also included.
The coming week will see the layout packed up with a number of small jobs to finish before Friday.

"Spike" is my Son Peter... He does the scenery, the structures and most of the painting. I do the trackwork, the woodwork and the simple DCC wiring. Really pleased with how the layout is developing, still lots of detailing to go.

Peter (@aka Spike) and I are taking Scruft's Jcn. to the Basingstoke MRS Open Day on Sunday April 12th. The Club Hut and adjacent Scout Hut (which we use for our open days) shall be open between 10.30 and 15.30. Admission is free. Sat Nav RG22 5HN ought to get you to Stratton Park where we can be found adjacent to the large car park and tennis courts.
If you model to 7mm scale using the S7 track standards then please consider bringing some stock to run during the day.
