Rob's 3D Drawing workbench

Last year when I drew up the cranes it was really meant to keep my hand in with 3D drawing. And to see if I could make animations work, which I mostly achieved, albeit getting the winch handle to move defeated me.

Fast forward a few months and a friend offered to print the files for me when the weather improved and he was true to his word.

He printed the mobile crane first and I assembled it earlier in the week and gave it a blast of primer. I turned up some small pins to l hold the clevises in place.

Next up is the yard crane version of the crane. However I made a boo boo when I sent through the parts list and missed a couple of the rollers/spacers and the one that I did remember came out a little under size. Undeterred I turned up one roller from a wooded garden stake/plant support stick and the other two from an old knitting needle.

I didn't get much further because I wanted to finish of my bolster wagons before we went out to Wensleydale show last weekend. I was building them there last year and I like to share what I had been working on when completed

Before fitting them, I painted the jib(s) wood coloured again using a mixture of Vallejo Woodgrain and Burnt Umber this time over a red oxide primer which gave a very nice looking result. This is one application where small visible layer lines actually add rather than detract from the overall finish

So much so that people who have seen and handled the jib thought it was a piece of wood.

I still have to fit the yard Crane jib, but it's painted up ready to fit.

Rob, with your second crane you have the jib bearing offset on the outriggers. This doesn’t look right to me. Should it not be like the wagon mounted one?

It should, I wondered if someone would pick up on that - an Oops moment on my part.

Sadly, I got it wrong on my original 3D assembly (which surprisingly nobody picked up on) and I unknowingly followed that assembly image when I came to put it together last week. It was only after I had stuck it all together and I while studying it after priming that I thought, that doesn't look quite right!

I would have to destroy this particular example to fix it but I'm not too perturbed as I hadn't really planned to print them and I have no real use for a yard crane.

But, I may ask for them to be reprinted at some point just to see it as it should be. I'm sure that it will no doubt nag at me going forwards if I don't scratch the itch.
