RM Web

Edit: just to say I didn't actually start this thread, the post below was originally in response to a direct question in another thread. This current thread is a collection of posts moved from other threads on the RMweb offline theme.

Andy over at RMweb has been having increasing issues with the host provider and it sounds like it all went a bit Pete Tong. They are trying to recover data and rebuild the forum and in the meantime it's offline. There's posts on Facebook which can be viewed even if you're not on it. Try a Google search for "RMweb Facebook" for the fill story.

Thanks for the update, Chris.

It looks like Andy is having a big issue with Dediserve, whom I presume to be the hosting organisation.

I do hope he succeeds

It's been 9 days since it went down. There has been some intest in this topic on a number of other forums.
I did wonder how long it would take for it to be brought up here.
It's got to be pritty bad if it taking this long to recover everything. I would not trade places with Andy York at the moment.

Sshhh! Not in front of the children.
No problems at all about mentioning RMWeb - we're not trying to compete with them in any sense at all, we all have our own little niche's to fill and hopefully we can provide something different but more than happy to have links to RMweb if there is some good creative modelling.

It's a little bit more of relief here, there by the grace of <insert deity of choice> go I. Fortunately being a little bit smaller in nature this forum is currently running about 28Gb for a full back up which is still in the realms of being able to download it to my home PC on a regular basis. Although have made a note to do another one very soon! I wouldn't like to speculate on the RMweb backups but likely to be an order of magnitude larger.

Would it be out of place in this thread to say a big thank you to Adrian for performing all the background wizardry that keeps WT running?
I can't take too much credit to be honest. The really valuable decisions were made by Cynric when he setup the forum so I'm just riding on the back of his excellent choice. For info these were
  1. Choosing the right software for the forum, XenForo - Compelling community forum platform which in my opinion is a step above any of the competitors.
  2. An excellent hosting company, Zen - the UK's best broadband who provide good technical support at all hours of the day and a Lancashire based (okay maybe Greater Manchester now) business operating from Rochdale as another bonus. Thoroughly recommended as their many awards attest to.
  3. An astute choice of hosting package, at the time a large disk quota and even after years of prolific photos only 30% capacity used.

Worth quoting this part from the 'About' Tab for those new to Western Thunder -
We fully recognize that there are other Model Railway forums and have no qualms about mentioning them directly particularly if you have a link to some good modelling. However this is not the place to bring any grievances or politics from those forums, we're here for the modelling not for having a moan about other forums.
Not that this Thread is moaning about RMweb; just asking what's happened to it.
It's also worth encouraging new members to read the whole 'About' Tab anyway, it's not very long and also enshrines our most important principle - "Play Nicely". :)

As an update, the message has now changed but RMweb is still offline:

I understand that the forum is moving away from the previous host following less than sparkling dedicated service from the current provider.

I also understand that the opportunity has been taken to slim down the site data by deleting any image containing GWR material and any post containing the words "pannier" and/or "prairie". That's wot a bloke down the pub told me anyway.

Have to agree about Zen, been using them for home internet for years, it is rock solid and they are always helpful when you ring them.

Wasn’t it the last wobble at RMweb that contributed to WT being setup?
There was a wobble at the time, certainly, though not the 'last' one and not as bad as the current crash.
But I think The Guv (Cynric) was contemplating setting up this Forum anyway.

A couple of observations from the WT Clubhouse:

1) I just found a used paper coffee cup left by the coffee machine - it had a “Over There” logo on it.
Well yes, it could have been placed in the waste bin, but really - a paper coffee cup?

2) Have you seen the state of the solder flux vending machine? That’s only happened just recently.

Just saying.

Sone good new and some bad. RMweb is up and running again but a years worth of data/posts have gone up in smoke. I will let you make your own minds up on which is the good or bad news!
