7mm Pete's workbench. LNER A6. PLUS?

Not much for the week. Think I'm getting slow in my old age. But, I'm pleased with the way it's going.

Not in the kit, but, I thought I really needed to make replica balance pipes, they are rather prominent under the cab steps,

Next up are the rather large tank brackets. Also the boiler top pipe and control rods.

I even got to the stage I felt the urge to see how it looked with the chimney and dome tested in place.

I've managed one side of the cab handrails.

I do have a question, would any one know if these were left or right hand drive?
I know nothing about the class, but if that large diameter pipe running down the top of the right hand tank and going into the smokebox is the ejector exhaust or train pipe, that implies the ejector and driver's brake valve is mounted inside the cab on that side - hence RHD?

They were indeed RHD.

Another slow week, I seem to be more tired after work.
But we have done a bit, I think we are down to major fittings now.
I've changed the tank brackets.

IMG_20260223_225644772_HDR.jpg

They look all over the place in the photo, must check them.

Did some cab details, I've gone with the lever reverser that came in the kit, but, I think being a passenger engine it may well have something else.

Theres a pipe running under footplate on the drivers side, this is now in place.

IMG_20260223_233301116_HDR.jpgIMG_20260223_233306913_HDR.jpg

Finally I've added a couple of slotted tubes to keep the front buffers horizontal. When fitted.

Now, that's the frames finished. Big clean up time and find the airbrush time.

Right what next. I've been looking at all the part finished wagons etc that I keep buying.
A LNER k3 that's half done, that I now have more information and new parts.
Or one of two new kits, a GWR 57XX/8750, or an 6 coupled industrial loco.

Hello Peter
New? Gateneal with the Halesowen address must be 40 if not 50 years old.
I don't know about the Mercian but that, from the box, looks quite old/new stock

I thought it was a 1980's product. Hopefully the fit will not be to bad.

While I'm painting the A6 I thought it was time to start another project.

It's to be the GWR 57XX. This is an old Gateneal kit. So it's quite basic. So what has been added or replaced, the safety valves and cover as the cast white metal is best kept as ballast. A set of sprung buffers. The arched brake hangers would be impossible to fit, so a set were found from the spares box. Also from there was a pair of milled coupling rods. A vast improvement over the etched brass ones in the box, but pre renamed to 8BA. I'll need to find my larger crankpins. I will specify any thing else as I use it.

First job was to open up the frame bearing holes from 1mm to fit the bushes.

IMG_20260308_232652401_HDR.jpg

Checking the footplate. A couple of splasher gaps need opening up a little. I also need to check footplate hieght. Hopefully it's low, otherwise I need to make new splasher sides.

IMG_20260308_232719081_HDR.jpg

Brakes were next. The halves were soldered together.

IMG_20260308_233640285_HDR.jpg

The holes enlarged and the outside cleaned up with a file. And checked on the hangers.

I'm hoping this will not take too long to build. My main concern is to how well the tanks will fold up.

Not done much this week, just cleaning up and pressing out rivets. Including ones not marked.

Can you spot the designers deliberate mistake. The cab sides are both for the same side.

I've now cut a new one

IMG_20260314_001237882_HDR.jpg

I'm still preparing parts for assembly. Adding details that are missing from the kit. But I think will improve the model, but I'm leaving some that. I do not think will add anything as either they are not easy to see etc.

Slowly getting to where it needs to be. There's a bit more work I'd like to do on the footplate. I've fitted larger splasher sides. These were taken from the drawing I have. At least now the wheels will have space to rotate. Although the insides will need cleaning out when it's remove from the wood block.

IMG_20260323_225230716_HDR.jpg

The tanks were folded up next, not quite as neat as I would have liked. I find it very hard folding half etch. So a bit of filler or solder will be used later.

IMG_20260321_001119570_HDR.jpg

I added a smoke box back and firebox front. Also needed to roll a boiler under side, measurements taken from a Scorpion kit I've just bought. I just had to shorten by a millimetre which I thout was pretty good for a fifty year old kit. But the underside of the tanks should go under further. I'm going to have to mount the boiler on something and use it to reach the tanks.

IMG_20260323_224258997_HDR.jpg

The cab front is tracked to the tanks for alignment for now will be screwed together later so hopefully the tanks will be removable. I attached one cab side for checking bunker position.

IMG_20260323_224231360.jpgIMG_20260323_224314480_HDR.jpg

The bunker sides have been attached to the rear. With these really old kits there were no rounded corners. But there is a way around it. If you solder rod on the inside of the corner and flood it with solder the outside can be shaped.

IMG_20260323_224214706.jpg

And all the bits rested together. A few bits to adjust but I reckon the next session will see the cab and bunker assembled onto the footplate.

IMG_20260323_225347543_HDR.jpgIMG_20260323_234746458_HDR.jpgIMG_20260323_225409804_HDR.jpg

Bit more later.
Back to the Scorpio multi pannier kit I bought, well I'm going to probably build an older 655 class from it, so I can use a few of the 57XX class parts on this. Plus there are lifting hooks and others parts that are duplicated.ehich will save a little fabrication.
This will not be a state of the art 57XX. But should be a good representation.

Opinions on etched kits seem to vary…….

1its an expensive way to buy metal sheet…..

2 it’s like being a mosquito in a nudist colony, not knowing where to start

3 my kit purchase . No 1 rule applies

4 put it on a shelf til later………….

But if it keeps you happy who cares
