Pen Y Bont revisited

It's been a while since I added to this thread so I thought I would share some of my scratch building items with you.

The layout has been photographed by Craig Tiley for Model rail magazine, and during the photo shoot I managed to stretch across the layout and wreck the loading gauge!
The original was a Ratio plastic kit and TBH was a bit weak in construction.
So, i decided to make my own using scrap code 75 bull head rails for the post and bits of brass wire etc. The "arch" was salvaged from the original Ratio job.

Her's the completed gauge before painting.

The yard crane was another item that kept getting knocked and damaged, again another Ratio plastic job.
I had by this time seen Geoff's crane on Penhydd, and Geoff kindly sent me some drawings and photos of his crane.

So, a few hours on the bench slaving over a hot soldering iron produced this

This was the type of crane I was after in the first instance and is the same as the one used at Aberaeron the inspiration for Pen Y Bont.

I'll post more soon if you want more that is!

Thanks Steve for the comment.
Has it happens I do have a picture of the completed crane on the layout.

This time I've made sure it can be easily removed and stored for transit![/attach]

Well, you kept asking for pictures so. I'll just add another for your perusal.
This is a bit of a cruel close up of the cottages and shops on "Station road"
index.php

These buildings were scratch built from a mixture of Wills and Slaters embossed plastic sheets.

I'm trying to sort out the better quality pictures for publishing on this forum, so will post some more once I have had a sort out of my photo albums.

Cheers for now

Have to say that I love the idea of having a bit of space at the end of a layout in which to do this sort of thing, and you have shown how well it can work.

I doubt that I am alone in finding waiting for these difficult to bear!

Happy new year to you all!

As we go into 2011 I thought I would try and turn the clock back nearly fifty years with a series of monochrome pictures.

June 1962 and 46520 waits to depart Pen Y Bont with a local passenger train to Oswestry

Later the same day an Ivatt 2-6-2T at the buffer stops.

where those pictures taken in natural light

Hello Ian,
In a word ...YES!
I quite often set the layout up on the patio in fine weather either to do some work, take some pictures or just play trains!

I find natural daylight can not be beaten for decent pictures. The colour originals though are not so effective in reflecting the era in which the layout was set. Monochrome then being the norm.
Of all the picture album books I own, most of the pictures are B&W so it was this I was trying to emulate here.

Ill post more (B&W and colour soon.

Just a quick news update.
No further progress on the layout to report I'm afraid, just the news that Pen-Y-Bont should be appearing in Model Rail issue 155 (out in April 2011 I think!).
I will be doing the article over the telephone with Richard Foster next Wednesday so hope all goes well for that.

I can't believe that it's almost 12 months since Craig Tiley came and did the photo shoot.
Thing is some of the pictures might be out of date now because of alterations and additions. I'm still not certain what pictures will be used so can't comment further until it's in print.

More progress when i can get a round tuit!
