It's been a while since I added to this thread so I thought I would share some of my scratch building items with you.
The layout has been photographed by Craig Tiley for Model rail magazine, and during the photo shoot I managed to stretch across the layout and wreck the loading gauge!
The original was a Ratio plastic kit and TBH was a bit weak in construction.
So, i decided to make my own using scrap code 75 bull head rails for the post and bits of brass wire etc. The "arch" was salvaged from the original Ratio job.
Her's the completed gauge before painting.
The yard crane was another item that kept getting knocked and damaged, again another Ratio plastic job.
I had by this time seen Geoff's crane on Penhydd, and Geoff kindly sent me some drawings and photos of his crane.
So, a few hours on the bench slaving over a hot soldering iron produced this
This was the type of crane I was after in the first instance and is the same as the one used at Aberaeron the inspiration for Pen Y Bont.
