Just for a laugh

A bone china plate which I received yesterday, a gift.

The underside is marked Made in England, but no manufacturer or artist are named. I rather like the awning over the cab, perhaps a sort of sun deck for the crew?

The rack between the rails is missing

I think this is correct not an oversight. The axle between the driven wheels (if fitted) is barely clear of the underside of the boiler, so a pinion would need a huge recess in the underneath of the boiler.

Conversely the leading wheels have no axle and aren't very round, so perhaps they are a sort of brake but gripping the running rails not a central braking rail.

Many years ago, I worked for a while in Turkey. Home one weekend, we went to my younger niece‘s Christening. Her brother & sister are a few years older, maybe at that time four and six. I presented each of them with a 1 million Turkish Lira note - this at a time when 2 million lire would just about buy you a beer.

They counted the zeros, several times, becoming more & more excited as they realised that, yes, these really were real one million lire notes. They went running to their dad, “Daddy! Daddy, look what Uncle Simon gave us!”. “Oh, how generous of Uncle Simon, though, perhaps not as generous as you may think”. Always the diplomat!

Anyway, one should never look a gift horse (iron or otherwise) in the mouth. It was a generous gift, if not as generous as the donor perhaps thought…
