There was nothing wrong with the kit supplied valence strip if you soldered the broad side to the underside of the footplate , the narrow edge (strip thickness) formed the valence side....if I remember correctly that's what it said in the instructions.Hi I had forgotten about the valance supplied with the kit I didn't use it. Wish I had access to that photo Adrian, whilst building mine! The lubricators have now been turned around, the buffer housings repainted black but the valance has been left as it would be a big job to remove and rebuild.I always try to work from photos - but then again even with photos I always seem to get something wrong!
In this case to illustrate your point from wikipedia and by coincidence the same number although slightly later in period I think. Fortunately "easy" to correct by filing down the valance a bit - i.e. certainly easier than adding material.
