Hi I had forgotten about the valance supplied with the kit I didn't use it. I used a much thinner piece
John
There was nothing wrong with the kit supplied valence strip if you soldered the broad side to the underside of the footplate , the narrow edge (strip thickness) formed the valence side....if I remember correctly that's what it said in the instructions.
Sorry to go on about this but as the kit has now vanished down the ABS black hole , one kit recently sold on eBay for £330, if the purchaser didn't know and saw photos of the incorrect valence the fault gets repeated.

I've got MRJ 39 and Talbot's Illustrated History.

Assumed copyright with me but WT'ers feel free to use for modelling purposes and if you need better scans, want to print/publish just shout out.

I really must scan the rest of them.....

Rob,

All those photos are later engines with Webb smokeboxes (circular doors) rather than Ramsbottom smokeboxes (which the kit supplies) and full cabs (an alternate available in the kit) rather than the open cab that they ran with to 1912 (if memory serves).

True, and Cooke buffers, lamp brackets in place of sockets, iron brakes etc but the basic bits are the same and nice picture of the top of the smokebox is useful.

I read into Mike W's post that Adrian Swain isn't in the best of health.
If that is the case (and I hope I am wrong) then the availabilty of kits etc is really of little importance.

I always try to work from photos - but then again even with photos I always seem to get something wrong!

In this case to illustrate your point from wikipedia and by coincidence the same number although slightly later in period I think. Fortunately "easy" to correct by filing down the valance a bit - i.e. certainly easier than adding material.

Wish I had access to that photo Adrian, whilst building mine! The lubricators have now been turned around, the buffer housings repainted black but the valance has been left as it would be a big job to remove and rebuild.

Hi guys , if you're building an LNWR special tank then get yourself a copy of Locomotives Illustrated #158 which has numerous photos of these locos both with and without lids .
