I shall KBO indeed. Perversely, I enjoy these challenges, and as you say Simon, the satisfaction when you get there in the end is all the greater.

I have been continuing on the cylinders.

I attached the formers to the original kit's cylinder frame, in the hope I could use at least part of the mountings.

A great deal of time was spent making sure they were symmetrical square and parallel, and the formers were reinforced with angle on the underside.

I then set about marking the new wrappers for the rivets - very 'old school' but none the worse for it.

and I can now form them to shape. That's tonight's task.

Cheers

Hi

A good session over the weekend saw the cylinders properly located on the chassis, and body and chassis reunited. All level and square again. I'm very much happier. It doesn't seem much - just to see the rounding of the top of the cylinder just below the valance, and just a little bit wider cylinders - for a lot of extra work, but I think these things matter to the overall look.

I was very much assisted by the timely publication of Steam Railway magazine issue 418 which has one of the best Patriot drawings I have seen. I took loads of known measurements off this, worked out an average scale and worked out where the cylinders should be. I don't think I was very far out.

Far too tidy!! Should the cylinders incline to the rear of the loco Richard? I'm assuming the centre line of the piston rod should line up with the centre of the middle axle. Maybe it's the photo.

Morning Tony

Far too tidy!!

You know me:)

Should the cylinders incline to the rear of the loco Richard?

Yes. They do! As on the real thing there is a 1 degree inclination - honest.

I'm assuming the centre line of the piston rod should line up with the centre of the middle axle.

It does.

Maybe it's the photo.

It is:) I think I'd have to take a close up of the cylinders absolutely broadside on, but I've just checked, they are just off square to the footplate. Phew! I don't have all those fancy schmancy tabs you've got:)

Regards
Tony

Hi

I've still been working on the Patriot....

P1010016a.jpg

The work on the engine has been around the firebox. I've added the boiler band cleats, handrail knobs, cab roof detail and a couple of castings. I've also added the wash out plugs and weren't those a game?! They have to be inserted from inside between the forebox former and the skin. I could only use fine long-nosed tweezers and try to hold them in the exact position while soldering them from the outside. Ha, ha ha, ha. My wife learned a lot of very rude words.

I then turned my attention to the tender - coz I'd got a bit fed up with the fight with the body.

P1010014a.jpg

and the tender is a very good representation of the Fowler 3500 gal variety. I shall do a lot of extra work on the chassis (no change there) but the body is pretty much a straight kit build.

And to give me some encouragement, I put the two together. It's a pretty big loco.

looks really good Richard, will you be taking it to Llangollen when you have finished it, so that they can finish their 'new' one to the same standard?;););)

Hi Richard,

I know that the deed is now done regarding the fitting of the wash out plugs, but could you of used some blu-tac to of held them in position from behind whilst soldering the front?

I seem to use blu-tac quite often of late and it certainly has saved my fingertips from their usual " heat treatment ", anyway have a great time over the weekend and send my regards to the chaps and I hope your shopping list is fulfilled .

Regards,

Martyn.

Hi Martyn

It never occurs to me to use Blu-Tac. I suppose I could have used it to attach the back of the plugs to some strip and used that to hold it in position. Perhaps for the next time I have the problem (Chowbent Jubilee probably)

My shopping list for Telford is alarmingly long, and I'm very much looking forward to the weekend - which extends into Monday on the SVR.

I shall think of you tomorrow, missing out.

Cheers

Hi Richard, I am building a 4mm Brassmasters Patriot for someone else but my next kit will be finishing the Rebuilt Royal Scot so I might need advise on that. I will be going to Telford on Sunday are you going both days?

Hi Len

OK, that makes sense.

Yes, I spend two full days at Telford - it's the first thing that goes in the family calendar. My wife knows that she can organise what she likes for the Telford weekend, just that I won't be there!

Hi,

After a very enjoyable Telford, and a couple of days out (Monday SVR footplate trip, and Thursday Harry Potter Studio tour) I am back on my workbench - working on the tender underframe of the Patriot. In fact, the whole of the underframe will be built using replacement Ragstone castings. I have already fitted the brakes, and turned my attention to the water scoop and operating gear. Here are all the scoop components cleaned up and drilled out as appropriate, laid out in their approximate positions:

I only have to scratchbuild a couple of brackets and then I can commence the fitting.
