DC system power supply

The Gaugemaster Wall Wart has given years of service but finally failed. Before spending another £30 on a WM3, are other devices available? Btw, the Gaugemaster warranty does not apply in this circumstance.

Most Wall Warts on eBay are 12-16VDC but I need 16VAC with 0.75A nominal output, I even tried the Power Supply Shop but unless it is for a laptop, they cannot supply anything.

Recommendations are eagerly sought.

Thank you

Tim

I've got a Hornby C990 800mA. I think it was secondhand on eBay so don't know if it's a current product. Presumably Hornby do things that need an AC supply, so they may be worth investigating if anyone needs one. Mine is currently in a box with a Gaugemaster panel mount controller, but hasn't been tested yet.

Going on a step from this query, I’ve an AMR hand held controller that I’d like to use,
I currently use a Gaugemaster hand held. Should the same power transformer ( one of GM’s own) work or do I need something different?
I’ve tried connecting the AMR but the red power overload light comes on.
Any bright ideas?

Does it need a DC or AC power supply? The Gaugemaster is supposed to use AC, but a DC supply should also work. If the AMR is designed to use a DC supply, connecting it to an AC supply may well have unfortunate and irreversible consequences in addition to not working!

12v DC power supplies are easy to find, but 16v AC aren't.

The AMR requires an A/C supply only as it has built in rectification for DC

Do not use a DC supply as it will not work
A DC supply can usually power an AC device - the rectifier just sends all the power one way. I've powered a 5amp NCE Procab this way for years. It's the other way round that shouldn't be used.

Hi John,

I bought a couple of transformers a few months ago, I will speak to the club treasurer and see who supplied them. I know that they were reasonably priced and the delivery was good.

Gaugemaster has a selection of two types of AC power units which are suitable for your AMR hand held controller depending on your budget. A couple of screen shots from Rails IMG_5691.png
