Earlier that day, D831 'Monarch' was working a north-bound inter-regional express from Bristol TM, via the Midland main line, when it developed mechanical problems at Mangotsfield and had to be assisted to Westerleigh Yard by one of the yard pilots. A Hymek was sent by Bath Road to take the train forward and the Warship languished in the yard, until a fitter attended and rectified the relatively simple fault that had caused it to fail.
The yard foreman then 'borrowed' the loco to cover part of a local trip working diagram, before sending it back southwards to it's home depot in Devon, and thus it was snapped at Callow Lane by Dick Wolsley, who just happened to be visiting, in the hope of seeing the Coalville Johnson 2F, that had been rumoured to be working in the area.
