Bradstock Loco

Another good rail colour is Humbrol Matt 186, although having bought two tins showing wildly different shades, I don't know which one is the real 186! I used the darker of the two shades because it was similar to PPC 977 Track Colour.

Large prairie 6169 at rest on one of the loco spurs. She will have been coaled and watered on arrival, the crew would have cleaned the fire and turned her, ready for the return working after a short lay over. Time now for a trip to the mess room to fill the tea can.DSC_5656 (1280x729)~4.jpg

51218 from Barrow Road has an outing to BradstockView attachment 227316
Hi Mike - a lovely photo of one of my favourite locos, and a superb little layout. I have fond memories of building (and kit-bashing) the 4mm-version Airfix kit back in my schooldays. I saw the real 51218 on a shed-bashing trip to Shrewsbury mpd in September 1963. As she was a Swansea East Dock loco at the time I speculate that she was en route to or from Horwich for some kind of attention. Odd, though, as she was withdrawn from service only a year later.

I cannot help but wonder, from your nom-de-plume, whether you have any connection with the Quintus who contributed to the Images of Steam (by the "Fenman" group) book back in the late 1960s? It's been a longstanding element of my railway library!

Although allocated to Swansea East Dock from Bristol Barrow Road from about November 62, It was found to be in a poor state so was sent to Horwich for repair and only arrived in Swansea in late September 63. It was, as you surmise, probably on its way to its new home when you observed it in Shrewsbury.

It was intended as a replacement for the life-expired ex-Cardiff Railway 1338 but after arrival in Swansea, 51218 seems to have spent its time lurking in the back of the shed or parked on a siding. I have never seen a photo of it in steam and/or working at Swansea.

Hi David,

Than,you for your comments.

I also have an old Airfix kit bashed version, seen here on my Cwm Caradoc layout. It is EM gauge with a little sagami can motor between the frames, and a rocking front axle. She is a very good runner, but doesn't get out much! The old P.O. coal wagon looks as if it's had a rough shunt, fairly prototypical I would think.

No connection with the "Fenman" group, but I have the excellent "Images of steam" in my collection.

The 3MT now has a new 82F shed plate. I am extremely impressed with the Railtec 3D transfers used, and will now use these in future.
For what it's worth, I use the following fixing method, as these transfers need a slightly different approach:-
Soak in water to release the transfer as usual. When released, using tweezers, place the transfer on a sheet of paper towel and dry.
Smear a minute amount of acrylic varnish on the rear of the transfer and place in position, adjust as required and lightly press with a cotton bud.
These transfers are quite robust despite their small size.
I will tone down a little when time permits.

You are not helping me resist the purchase of 82030....

Heljan's large prairie is a fine model,. This one has had a few additions, lost wax castings for the lifting rings etc. and a few reductions, mainly in the weight department. 6169 is now due for re numbering, as this loco carried lined green in my 1960 period.
I will have to check on a suitable number, preferably one allocated to the Bristol District at this time.
