Edit - The original thread title was Project CAC, but the layout has been renamed to something more sensible before it goes to an exhibition - hopefully that will make the next line make more sense :)

...or Project 'Cheap As Chips' to give it a proper working title :)

There are a few aims with this little project, but boiled down to a minimum its about getting something up and running as cheaply as possible. To that end, I've been through the loft and cupboards and assembled the following bits and pieces:
The baseboards are from an aborted EM project 'Newent' which appeared on this forum very early this year. There is another more interesting EM project in the offing, indeed some of the stock for this layout will just be coverted from EM to 00 in the short term to get me going.
The DCC PowerCab is a leftover from my HO layout, as is all the wiring, connectors etc
The Hymek and 08 were bought from the Guv for Newent, one of the guards vans is from Neil, as is the Airfix mineral kit, the other van is well over two decades old.
The track is all code 100, some of it dating back to my first proper layout built 25 years ago - I've managed to get three good working points out of it plus a few bits of straight track. Simon donated some surplus code 100 track earlier this week when I popped in to see him.
Scenic wise, there are bags of ballast, static grass and trees left over from the HO layout, plus various bits accumulated in the intervening time.
My Dad donated enough plaster from his stores to do the basic ground cover and I reckon there must be enough paint in the shed to get everything woodwork wise covered.
The only things bought so far are a rail buffer stop (have two 'earth filled' stops from the old layout) plus the two buildings, a Ratio Provender Store and a Wills Station Halt.

So, although I've spent money in the past buying all this stuff, most of it has lain unused for at least a year, I reckon with a tail wind I can call that 'free', after all most of us have a fair few bits stored for 'one day' :D Costs so far £21.48.

A quick pic with everything bar the scenic stuff

The track plan will be very simple, a loop and a long siding - think a flip of Barry Norman's Lydham Heath but with pointwork rather than a moveable storage yard. The whole thing will be scenic, mainly because its in the lounge and there doesn't seem any point in wasting space making an off-scene area.

I'm hoping it will be a bit of fun, quick and I'll find out whether a simple track plan is enough, or whether I'll want something more complicated when I build something proper.

Right, I reckon I'm good to go, I'll attempt to post regular update photos..

First job after tidying up was to use the adjusting feet on the legs to level up the top surface of the boards - I used a metre ruler to check across a reasonable amount of each board
Levelling Up.JPG

The holes for the locating dowels were drilled and they were then hammered into place
Locating Dowels.JPG

The boards were bolted back together and the fiddle yard end (RHS ) given a first coat of primer to seal it. Whilst that was drying, the buildings were given a coat of primer
Buildings in Primer.JPG

Unfortunately, the paint I'd planned to use on the fascias turned out to be knackered, I'm guessing it might have frozen over last winter whilst in the shed  A quick mooch around looking for some paint turned up two rolls of Fablon, groovy baby :) I seem to remember being given them years ago, but for the life of me can't remember why - no matter, reckoned that would do a reasonable job of covering the fascias, and it was white as a bonus.
A couple of hours of rolling out cutting and generally getting covered in the backing glue (sticks to your hands and everything bar the thing you want it to) and we have something that looks a little more presentable
Fablon Covering.JPG
The Fablon wasn't happy turning around some of the corners at the ends of each fascia board so I've cut a strip off to match the width of the border around the lift out panel on the fiddle yard board - undecided whether to keep it or touch back in with paint.
Another coat of paint on the fiddle yard beckons, then its time to clean up the track and finalise the track plan

Oh look a snow scene :)) I thought a man like you would have set a tripod and timer to take a shot every 2 minutes....

White Fablon is a bit unimaginative, how about the woodgrain variety - or better still the quilted stuff you put on the front of your bar.

Hi Steve,

The baseboards are from an aborted EM project 'Newent' which appeared on this forum very early this year.....

Well you are a dark horse and I can only think you have fallen under the spell of Marshcastle when you visited Simon ?
Earlier this week I was actually thinking about a new layout in 00 myself because at times I get p****** off having to change wheels before I can run new stock on the layout.

There is another more interesting EM project in the offing, indeed some of the stock for this layout will just be coverted from EM to 00 in the short term to get me going.

Glad to hear that you are not deserting EM and I will be looking forward to seeing what you come up with for both the Cac 00 and new EM layouts.
I see the baseboards are to your usual neat standards and I rather like the look of your scale rule ! :D

Festive, No? :D 2 min time lapse would have been cool, maybe next time ;)
If was a welsh themed layout you could call it 'Cac-Y-Kecks' or 'Cac-Y-Pant';) Just a thought mind,
:))

If you can find some quilted stuff, I'll gladly replace the white stuff :) Are you thinking of funky purple or a variety of browns and oranges :))

Hi Geoff
Nothing to do with Marchcastle, although we did run some trains when I was there :) I'd actually taken the baseboards and track down to my folks over Xmas in case the weather was crap, Dad and I could have had a session in the shed - the weather was good however, so we didn't. Shame, I think he would have enjoyed it. I have missed having a layout at home and 00 is the easy option in terms of something quick - I did smile whilst hearing the clickity - clack of wagons over the rail joints so its worth while :) You need a little test track Geoff :D

Have got as far as building points for the EM layout, but too busy at the moment to make a good go of it. Well, that and it takes up a fair bit of room and I need to tidy up and organise things a bit better :) Scale rule works wonders for 12":foot stuff :D

Boo :( Maybe next year :D

Track plan finalised :) I told you its not very exciting so don't moan :D

Track Plan 2.JPG

I still have to trim the track that runs off the ends of the boards, but its basically there. Had to do some jiggery pokery to try and keep it sensible so there was enough space in the fiddle yard - first plan gave me space for an 08, 3 wagons and a brake, not really large enough! In the end I sacrificed some length of the long siding, moved the second turnout from the fiddle yard onto the main board and that freed up enough space to make it a usable layout. A bit of Inglenookery is also an easy option :) The copperclad strips have been cut to span the track either side of the baseboard joins, just need gluing into place now.
Track Plan 3.JPG

Immediate task is to align all the track, mark the baseboards up so it can all go back in the same place, remove and trim those lengths that need it and sort the copperclad out. Then we can nail it in place (hoping the ballasting will hold it all down eventually).

And finally, a photo from a more normal view (ie not standing on the sofa :D

I do love the Name Project Cac. It's like something we have always wanted to do but where all to afraid to do it

Do remember to put gaps in the copper before testing the wiring, unlike the mutual friend of ours who pulls levers for a living, who re-wired his whole layout - twice - before he realised the cause of the dead-short!

Caca is French, by the way, for, well, poo. Just be careful you don't go too far and end up in it!

This is quite topical in our house as just before Christmas I was in Boyes stores and got a meter of wood grain fablon and another meter of leather look. The plan is to try it for the interiors of coaches and seats - hopefully it will work instead of using my good ladies hoarded stock of real leather.

Looking good Steve I am impressed that you are able to have it in the lounge:thumbs:

Will do  In fact, I shall do it as soon as I've finished typing, can't forget then :D

I'll do my best :)

Cheers Rob :) Don't be too impressed, there's no-one else here to moan about its location :D

Track is all fixed down, soldered across the copperclad strips and now cut, I'll test in a minute to check it all comes apart...
Track Laid.JPG

Holes have been drilled for all of the wiring and those fishplates which needed soldering have been, erm, well soldered. Time to gap the copperclad....

Steve,
Have been following this with interest, have just noticed something though, have you got a screw loose?
Alan
Yup, and one of the bolts for the legs isn't all the way through :D
The clearance hole it goes through isn't quite a clearance hole if you get my drift and I can't get the ruddy thing out at the moment:oops: I shall attempt another go tomorrow when the boards are separated and laid on their sides for the wiring, right now the bolt is doing a stellar job of keeping the extension lead in place whilst I'm soldering:thumbs:
