BAD NEWS 3D printed spoked driver centres go eccentric

There are plenty of companies in the UK and other parts of the world who can do the same with "lost resin" or "lost plastic" casting.
As Nigel says, there's a great selection of businesses wherever you are, that offer to print, cast, machine whatever you want, from your own CAD file. If you can, or have someone draw it for you, check out Craftcloud® | Streamlined Service for 3D Printing & CNC Machining to get an instant quote and an idea of the materials and services on offer.

The original Shapeways business of years ago, was early in this field - and initially I had good results from them.

But as Lawrence has alluded to above, some businesses seem better in their specialist area than others. Lawrence is a master of finely detailed 3D printing, so that allows him and customers off to a good start.

Are you sure the problem is caused by the unequal volume of plastic over the area of the wheel, rather than pressure? I assume the model has stood on its wheels, so some spokes in tension and others in compression?

Im sorry Brian but where are all these magical companies that are more than willing to cast things for you? I have been searching for months to try and find a company within the UK happy to help and I either get ignored, turned down, or drag things out for so long because they are simply not interested.

I would love to know of any casting companies that are more than happy to help me out. Im more than happy supplying a list of companies I have tried but failed getting anywhere with!

Hi Julia

I’ve not tried myself yet, but was going to drop this UK based guy a line soon about some potential casting work….

Be interested to know how you get on, with whoever you choose. :)

Thanks - I knew he’d posted on WT, but I couldn’t remember his name (sorry John!), or the thread title!

Late getting back to to you, sorry. A search for "Brass jewellery casting in UK" brought up several likely suitable services. Whereas a search for "Investment casting from digital files" listed suppliers of industrial components.

One example: Jewellery Casting

Yes, unequal volume of plastic seems to be the principal contributor to this issue, aided to a small degree by use of a high strength grade of Loctite.

H spoke wheel distortion_0728a.jpg

I did check the spare sets of wheels - bored for axles but not fitted to them. The runout is less at only 2 thou TIR (tiny, I know  ), but suspect if Loctite 680 was used on the axle (I won't), the runout would increase to that of the wheelsets in use.

It spends most of its time upside down or in bits :)

I know a few people have printed with an engineering grade (machinable) resin in the past: eSUN LCD Hard Tough 3D Resin 0.5KG/1KG

Do we know if this makes a difference.

Mike, specification of the "Somos Taurus" material used is here:

It's quite solid and robust - but do rig up a vacuum cleaner if machining it, as the fine dust created floats in the air.
