7mm At the Western End of F7

I read it as being two sheets - one of which varys between 16.5 and18thou - the second sheet is a consistent 22thou.

Yes rereading it I can see how it should be read, but it does seem odd that the sheet thickness should vary by 0.0015", all I can say is that it has been rolled wrong if it is going from one side to the other, or it could be that the rollers are worn and in need of some TLC. In that the centre of them has worn.

Saying all that, the etcher should sort that out as he/she bought the metal stock and it can affect the work that they are doing not just in the model making businesses, if for instance it was going to be for a short run of printing plates. I'm just guessing that it's the brass sheet that is out of thickness.

Oz,
I am using two thicknesses -
.38mm for most construction
.55mm for the thick pieces of plate.
Only the .38mm shows a range of thicknesses. I am happy that the range of thickness of the .38mm will not cause a problem with this build. All have been measured with an old 'proper' mic and with a digital vernier. I have only measured the test shot and have yet to check the production run.

Progress on the Coil has got me to the end of soldering.



Continuing the theme of outdoor workbenches! The top rail is held in place while soldering with two simple fold up jigs.


When I started the build I couldn't find the big riveting dolly for my Double L riveter; guess what I found as I finished! The next one will thus have heavy rivets one the chassis side and I would grateful if people don't point out it's flaws to this one. It will only sulk.



Next job is the planked platform at each end and the planks on the inside of the cradle ends. A set of bolsters need to be made to mount this on on a set of bogies currently under a Boplate. I might get it painted by Larkrail; markings will have to wait until I can get some made up. Any experiences of the different manufacturers and recommendations?

I used Railtec for some custom diesel loco numbers, the price was reasonable and they only took a week to do them.

I'm just getting some details together for in cab transfers such as NO SMOKING, CAUTION LOW HEADROOM etc to get them to produce those.

a bit more progress to report. The build revealed a slot in the wrong place and the artwork has been corrected. The error didn't stop the build as I resorted to the old fashioned piercing saw!







I am resisting the temptation to start adding grot until the markings are sourced and in place. The brake wheels are awaiting the delivery of an upgraded printer; the trial print which I did back in February shows the circular section of the rim and made me decide to leave the wheel off the list of etched parts.
Now to do the photographed build for the instructions, although I should be building the refinery on The Acme Refining and Steel Establishment.

thank you for your kind comments, In reply:

Dan - the builders plate does look like it could do with the raised lettering; something new to learn how to do. I will have to see if there are any detail photos on Paul's web site. There is a 3D model of the label clip that awaits the return of the printer to run off. The trial one appeared in an attempt to print the side of the wagon and looked satisfactory, even if the side warped.

Richard - the build took about a week which included taking notes for instructions. There are six sets of etches, two for me, some for John Talbot and a few spare.

Steve - I will trial your suggestion about the name on one of the mock up buildings at Larkrail. Of course, the name should be pronounced in the Father Jack manner!

Today is a very satisfying day as it saw the fulfillment of two years work. Not only have I drawn up my first etches but I have now printed my own bogies for the vehicle; this has been quite a fight. The hand brake wheels were produced the same way.



Now to work out how to do the hood convincingly. I may be some time.

Progress on the next 52XX has been slow but it is now starting to get to a nearly finished state. Here it is sat on the workbench in customary generous working area.


From this angle you cannot spot the buffoonery. However, from the front....

For those in watching in black and white, the pink ball is behind the red ball, sorry check out the chimney, a very jaunty angle. Nothing a bit of debonder can't sort out. In fact there were three attempts to sort it out. Now that is bodging!

That's a fine collection of pin chucks you have there Simon. I wish I was flush enough to have a collection like that and imagine it saves a lot of time, by not having to swap drill bits over constantly. I have stored the idea for future use though.

Regarding your wagon kit, is it actually available to buy yet, or at some point in the future please?
