Fencing was sprayed sandstone colour and then weathered with brown acrylic in lashings of soapy water....

The dry run last week favoured curved fencing, but I'm not so side now the grass is down...

Straight fencing against the backscene is less claustrophobic and open....

Funny but it feels more natural, which is odd because a fence is not natural at all. I like the subtle rise in the lay of the land as well.

I think I prefer the curved fence. You can always put a couple of plastic sheep in the gap between backscene & fence!

I vote for the straight fence . Hi Simon , the problem with putting a few sheep in the gap if the fence is curved is that there are none munching on the grass thats on the backscene so it may look a bit strange .

Travelling up and down to Barnstaple and Okehampton as a guard, I very often see livestock right up against the line side fencing getting some sun or shade (so I’d vote for a sheepy or two!).

All the best,

Nick.

I’d agree with you the straight one does look better as it gives a lot more depth of field which is one of the great assets that you have created along the whole length of the layout

Curved fence, straight fence.... The straight fence is more railway-like as when the land was originally purchased they would have taken a 'slice' irrespective of the landowners boundaries unless there were properties to which poked into the yard. The only point the fence would start to curve is by the headshunt as it follows the 'main' line.

Taking Llanfyllin as an example I've highlighted the railway boundary on this OS map extract from NLS. Most of the boundaries are straight unless they follow a natural feature such as the river or accomodate properties sush as Rose Villa below..

While searching for Llanfyllin station to look at the boundaries I came across this postcard on a well known auction site. A pre-grouping photo with a full goods yard - mainly timber. There's also a mixture of wagons, MR, LNWR, L&Y, SECR

Perhaps you could add timber to your goods traffic?

Hi Dave, There was a lot going on in Llanfyllin yard at the time that photo was taken and I suspect it was when materials were arriving for construction of the dam. Maybe the large shed in the yard was to hold the teams of horses needed to haul material to site 10 miles distant. Anyway, thanks for taking the trouble to show boundary fences. I'm going with the straight fence...

I agree Phil. That is a most realistic picture and shows the value of the larger scale...

Fencing glued in position. A cock-eyed section near the crane needs attending to...

Drove over to the Llangollen line seeing having been lead to believe it was a 2-train timetable with one being steam. Wasted my time and fuel. As with most preserved lines, people invested to keep steam live. The revived outfit is now promoted as a heritage diesel railway. There was barely anyone about...

Hi Larry, I hope you are well ? The layout is coming on a treat.

To me that picture is but a thing of beauty , a lovely Wickhams Unit

Best regards

I spread PVA with a modellers paint brush along the fencing and along the edge adjacent to the 'ballast', then fill in with a ½" brush. Autumn grass was then sprinkled along the ballast edge and vacuumed off....

Summer grass covers the remainder of the area and was sucked up by the vacuum cleaner to stand on edge...
