The late lamented Iain Rice was a great wordsmith and provided inspiration to so many people in the books he wrote. The last of his books aimed at the UK prototype was ‘Creating Cameo Layouts’. Heavily featured in this book is the last layout he designed and built ‘Longwood Edge’. It was built jointly with Don Leeper with whom he had previously built Hepton Wharf, one of the first Cameo layouts.
Longwood Edge is 4mm scale P4 and built on two levels with L&Y on the lower level and LNWR on the upper one. The layout has been exhibited twice, in basic form at Scaleforum in 2015 and again at Railex 2019 about 80/90% finished. After that South Hants Model Railway Club (SHMRC) member Tony Sullivan offered to help finish the layout but COVID struck. Don unfortunately succumbed to COVID in the April of the first lockdown and with Iain’s declining health the layout remained at Don’s house unchanged from its last outing. Roll on three years and Don’s wife Pauline was keen to see the layout finally completed and exhibited. Through Tony Sullivan the SHMRC offered its services to complete and exhibit Longwood Edge, the SHMRC has a long association with LNWR and L&Y layouts through its EM LNWR/GWR Hope-under-Dinmore, P4 L&Y Ogden Fold and Eastwood layouts so we thought we were reasonable candidates for the job.
We are pleased to announce that Pauline has accepted the SHMRC’s offer and custodianship of Longwood Edge has passed to the SHMRC. As part of agreement, we have also taken over the custody of Hepton Wharf. Both layouts have been collected and are now in our possession.
Longwood Edge needs to be evaluated to work out what exactly needs to be done to finish it scenically and make it exhibition friendly. but it will be at the new Scalefour South East which is part of the Uckfield show on 21st and 22nd October where it will be in much the same state as it was last exhibited at Railex. The aim is to have it completed for possibly Larkrail 2024 but definitely the SHMRC show in November 2024.
Hepton Wharf is up and running after 13 years of storage, but needs some TLC before it goes to the Uckfield show and completing the year at the SHMRC show in Portsmouth on 18th November. You may have seen advertised that Hepton was going to the L & Y society modellers weekend at Todmorden on 25th March this year. We have just been informed that this is no longer the case.
Details of the Uckfield show can be found here.
