Well that would certainly be challenging to make in wood. How did they prototypically bend 4.5" square timber? Or was it a milled piece?
Probably done by placing the timber section in a steam oven... after a few hours the wood becomes pliable and can be put into a jig similar to that shown earlier.How did they prototypically bend 4.5" square timber?

Here are a couple of pictures of one of the ends. They are both complete to this stage and apart from the strip that goes around the edge, that's about it for the time being. Talking of the strip, I have been looking for Evergreen Strip No. 1110 .020" x .208" which is the perfect width for the ends. Can I find it? No, apart from the USA and I'm not paying that amount of postage and customs et al. Anyone know where it can be bought in this country?
