Hunslet locomotive liveries

The following information is from a document titled "Hunslet Paint Book" which gives details of the livery applied to locomotives they produced between 1890 and 1908. I've just extracted the information on locos supplied to North Wales, mainly locos supplied to slate or granite quarries. The entries are sometimes rather brief such as "Painted M.R. Colour" (i.e. Midland Railway), but others have more detail including sketches of the nameplates and corner details of the lining.

All locos are nominal 2ft gauge* unless otherwise stated.

HE 601 SILURIAN B.jpg

The Hunslet works photo of SILURIAN, possibly the only photo ever taken of this loco. Note that the white lining extends to the frames, springs and inside of the buffer beams. Did the L.& Y. Rly. ever do that ?

SILURIAN was slightly smaller than the usual Quarry Hunslet, with 6" x 8" cylinders and 1'‑6½" dia. wheels compared with the 7" x 10" cylinders and 1'-8" dia. wheels of a small Quarry Hunslet. It was despatched from the works on 29th January 1894 for use at the Glanrafon Slate Quarry, situated on the lower slopes of Snowdon just north of Rhyd-Ddu. The quarry was connected to the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway by a series of two inclines, and was a major source of traffic on that section of the line.
The quarry closed circa 1914, the equipment dismantled and the lease from the Vaynol Estate surrendered in 1916. The only further information known about SILURIAN is two spares orders to Hunslet in March 1917 from the Albert Sheet Iron Co. Ltd., Hill Top, West Bromwich. That works was closed and demolished circa 1923 and there is no further trace of the loco.
